Globe 2023: A year for adopting circular practices

by Yunas Chaudhry Internet Marketer and Blogger

Globe looks back on 2023, a year that was marked by innovative efforts in circularity. Globe's commitment to environmental stewardship was demonstrated by its circular approach, which is based on responsible consumption and production. It aims to increase resource efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by focusing on waste and pollution reduction.

Globe 2023: A year for adopting circular practices

Globe takes pride in the integration of circularity into our sustainable business practices. Our circular initiatives have helped us set new standards in environmental stewardship. We are committed to advancing innovative solutions that will foster a healthier world as we move forward," said Yoly Cristino, Globe Group's Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications officer.

Circular innovation is embedded in the customer experience

Globe's 2023 journey towards circularity saw the introduction of upcyclable and recyclable packaging in its Globe At Home Prepaid GFiber offer. This set the stage for the transition of packaging for other products into more sustainable options.

The company has also opened the Gen 4 store in Glorietta 3. It features 100% LED lighting and digital screens for brand advertising, replacing traditional tarpaulins, flyers and tarpaulins. Digital infocards are displayed on tablet displays instead of paper, eliminating the use of paper.

E-Waste Management: Focus on the Value Chain

Globe's efforts to be sustainable include a focus on e-waste, as many of its products and services are dependent on electronic devices and telecoms equipment. Globe distributes mobiles, tablets, broadband and peripherals, which all contribute to the value chain's carbon emissions.

EWaste Zero Program has refocused on the disposal of mobile devices and broadband devices. Globe is among 12 major mobile operators in the world to adopt GSMA’s new device circularity target aimed at extending devices' lifespans and promoting circularity.

Partnerships with the community and strategic partnerships

Globe supported plastics recycling initiatives throughout the year through partnerships with entities such as Integrated Waste Management, Inc. to ensure proper waste separation, collection, and after-processing. recycling of marketing materials to prevent disposal in landfills, and a pilot project for upcycling plastic spools used to install cable lines were also notable. Globe and IWM also joined forces to promote awareness of circularity and encourage action at the G Music Fest.

Empowering employees to create sustainable change

Globe realized that its commitment towards sustainability began internally. The internal take back program, launched in this year, encourages employees to return laptops that are no longer needed for recycling or remarketing. E business cards have also been introduced to reduce paper usage and embrace digital alternatives.

The WASSUP (WASSUP Single-Use Plastic) program is also a popular choice among the employees. This initiative encourages the concessionaires to reduce the use of single use plastics, and it incentivizes the employees to use reusable containers at the cafeteria. In the cafeteria, cashless transactions are promoted using GCash to reduce paper waste.

Supporting the move of the country towards a circular economic system

Globe supports legislations that promote waste management and circularity, such as the Philippines' Extended Produce Responsibility Act 2022. This law requires large companies to recover some of the plastics they release onto the market. Globe was recognized for its leadership in promoting environmental responsibility by supporting policies that are essential to long-term sustainability.

Look forward to a continued commitment

It is an enormous task to transition from a linear economy to a circular one. This requires a collective effort. Globe remains determined and optimistic, but it will continue to move forward with the help and support of its employees, customers, partners and other stakeholders.
