Ghostbusters Is Back and Here's What They Should Wear

You know who likes jumpsuits? Everybody. Really! Look no further than the following spread: Studio 54 regulars Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall (wide-leg, halter-necked), pose-perfect Victoria Beckham (strapless, sleek, monochrome), and Stella McCartney, who always shows a set (most recently in gray, navy and embroidered in colorful swirls). And who can blame them? The right jumpsuit delivers an element of “ready for anything” performance possibilities with a hint of allure (what are you wearing under there, anyway?), all Kill Bill meets Marianne Faithfull’s Girl on a Motorcycle.

But the most convincing and unlikely case for the slip-on, slip-off piece is not on the runway or on an It girl. Rather, it hails from the cast of the hotly anticipated Ghostbusters reboot, who return the no-frills factor to the utilitarian look. After all, when you are in the midst of battling an angry spirit, there is no time for buttons and layers—a jumpsuit ensures a one-step process that is both quick and time-sensitive. Even back in 1984, the film’s original cast (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and the late Harold Ramis) wore stylish, industrial-strength, paranormal-proof tan jumpsuits with oversize pockets and multiple zippers that wouldn’t look out of place on a fall 2015 runway. For the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II, the ghoul-hunting characters received a refurbished version of the uniform, this time in a slate gray for what we can only assume was an effort at a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.

Fast-forward to 2015: Ghostbusters is receiving a very welcome all-female, all-funny reboot with the help of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. And with an updated set of faces, we suspect it’s high time that the apparition-extinguishing staple will also receive an upgrade from its baggy eighties heyday. Maybe this time the costume will come in distressed denim or in khaki green with an easy-pull belt (fingers crossed), but nonetheless, it will still pack as much punch, if not more, than the jumpsuits of the previous incarnations.
