Geography and Branches of Geography

Branches of Geography

Today there are two main branches of geography.

1.       Cultural geography

2.       Physical geography

Cultural geography:

It is the branch of geography that deals with human culture and its relevant impact on the earth. The subject study foods, religion, languages, urban areas, agriculture, economies, transportation systems, demographics, population and more.

Physical geography:

It is the branch that deals with the earth’s natural features, the humans home. It is the branch that tells about water, animals, air, land and water of the earth that includes everything that is the component of the four spheres i.e. the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere.

Physical geography is the sister science of geography but physical geography stresses more on the landscape on the earth surface and not what is inside the planet.

Other main areas of geography include the regional geography that includes the detailed knowledge of a particular region, its culture as well as physical components and geographic technologies including the technologies like GIS (Geographic Information System) and GPS (Global Positioning System)

A significant system for the division of geography subject is called as Four Traditions of Geography.

History of Geography:

The history of geography as a scientific subject can be dated back to the Greek scholar Erathosthenes. Moreover; it was developed in the modern era by Alexander von Humboldt and from there you can trace the history of geography in the modern era.

Studying Geography:

Since 1980s, when Geography subject was not taught well across the US, there has been revival in the education of geography. Thus, today most primary, secondary and university students are selecting geography as a subject.
