Pests and plant enemies are not uncommon in agriculture, and there are various methods of trapping, killing and removing them from the farm. Farmers need to decide on what method to use based on what pest they are trying to get rid of and how. Not all measures are equally effective. A very prevalent pest, the mole (or gopher), can be countered using traps. This then requires that farmers know how to set a gopher trap, or how to set a mole trap.

Agricultural pests may be of different kinds. There are those which are plants or flora, such as molds and weeds. These are typically treated with herbicides, or chemically. Then there are those which are animal in nature, or insects. These are also treated with chemicals, but in the case of larger animals, such as small mammals, physical mechanisms such as traps are used.

These latter pests can also be poisoned, but the issue that arises is the distribution of the poison into the rest of the ecosystem. Poison is hazardous to everything else, too. No animal is immune to it, so anything that ingests it dies, even the domestic cats and dogs of the farmer. These also die.

This is particularly dangerous where the corpses of poisoned moles are eaten by scavenging animals. The larger animals in the food chain are also susceptible to poisoning. As their carcases rot, the unmetabolized poison leeches into the earth and starts to contaminate the ground water. Or it simply remains poisonous in the soil itself.

The use of physical mechanisms to trap or kill these pests then becomes more desirable. These mechanisms are usually traps, and they may take several forms. Not all of them are safe to use or simple in their application.

One type which is probably familiar to the reader is the snare. A snare uses a wire that arrests the foot of the trapped animal and keeps the animal immobile. The animal is then found and killed by the farmer, or it dies anyway because it cannot leave the snare and so it starves. Snares pose a threat to other animals, too, and this is why they are not always used.

If gophers (moles) are the specific problem on a farm, one method of individually targeting and killing them is to pump exhaust fumes into their burrows. This is achieved by inserting a pipe into the burrow and then attaching its other end to the exhaust outlet of a motor vehicle. People who gas themselves in their cars use the same principle to end their lives. The exhaust fumes cause the animals in the burrow to asphyxiate. They are unable to exit the burrow because the pipe is blocking the opening at ground level.

All of these methods are on the market, but farmers should do proper homework before deciding on which is the most suitable for their pest situation or farm. The use of poisons requires great care and farmers who use them should be aware of their environmental impact. Physical traps, such as snares, may also harm or kill other, unrelated, animals.
