The functioning guidance manual provided with the UPS comprises of some common instructions and other instructions which are specially applied for UPS. The common instructions include some points, such as –

1. Installation of the UPS:

The UPS should be installed just in the straight-up place. Two types of UPS are there – the conventional rack type and the tower type. Thus, the straight-up place has been indicated on the UPS for both these UPS or in the instruction manual for the users. The installation of the UPS also includes the area of the UPS. A UPS should be kept in the location where there is no high humidity, or direct sun rays, or exposure to moisture.

2. Protecting the UPS:

You should not keep or cover the UPS in an encircled area. Certain places are there in the UPS which are manufactured either as heat consuming ventilators or cooling holes. These are basically meant for cooling or consuming heat of the UPS. However, the most important thing is that the UPS should not be kept in those places.

3. Functioning load:

For a certain functioning load, the UPS has been manufactured like either 1KV or 600 VA UPS. It is recommended not to connect or use loads which are more than the particular rating on to that specific UPS. It may cause to short circuiting or even the UPS may fail if it has been given with a circuit breaker.

A really basic usual guidance which is provided in almost every manual of UPS manufacturers is that you should never install UPS in a thunderstorm. Only for the indoor use, the UPS is manufactured. You need to utilize it just for connecting devices for which it is manufactured not other high capacity devices like motors.

Some UPS are given with extra sockets, which don’t provide out power backup but give power surge precautions. These are particularly marked on your UPS. Thus, while connecting the major devices like the CPU power, ensure that you connect the CPU’s line to the power backup and other unnecessary devices to the power surge precaution line which don’t need power backup but meanwhile it will be requiring protections of power surge.

The UPS battery is actually of the maintenance free battery, which means that there is no requirement for battery’s periodical servicing. You are left with no substitute other than replacing the battery, if you cause to experience the battery failure. Battery replacement should be done by only a trained technician. There are no extras that are given inside the UPS that require you to take out the back cover or damage the UPS.

You need to disconnect the UPS from the mains after switching it off, while opening it’s back cover for servicing purpose or other particular functions like fault diagnosis. Never handle metallic items in your hands or wear rings while opening the back cover of the UPS.

Every new UPS needs to be charged for at least 24 hours or as instructed in the functioning guidance manual before put to functional utilization. Never keep your UPS in a discharged condition for a long duration.
