Future of Guard Tour System

by Dharmik Babariya SEO Analyst

Several companies today are opting for hiring security guards on the basis of providing 24/7-hour security to them. This demands the guards to take a tour of the premises at regular intervals and detect any suspicious activities. Further, they are required to report it to the higher authorities. However, some of the guards might have this tendency to skip the tours. To avoid this from happening guard tour monitoring systems were introduced.

A quick look into the types of guard tour systems used till date

Before jumping into the future of guard tour monitoring systems, let us first understand the types of systems used till date from its inception:

1. Watchman’s Clock System:

It is one of the oldest types of guard tour monitoring system used since the 19th century. Various key stations are installed within the premises. During the patrol, the guard stops at each assigned key station, removes the key and inserts it into watchman’s clock. The key number gets printed on the dial located within the clock. This provides a record of the time when keys were used. At the end of the day, the dials are removed and replaced.

2. Electronic Guard Tour System:

In this type of system, the security guards are provided with an electronic device to be carried along during patrols. Premises are covered with several checkpoints located at several geographical points. When the guards arrive at checkpoints, they scan the electronic device and enter a specific code if any suspicious activities are found.

3. Integrated Guard Tour System:

Integrated guard tour system uses card readers instead of checkpoints. A guard tour software is installed on the computer that controls security. Whenever the guard is on patrol, he carries a card which is swiped at the provided card reader points. The location and time are noted in the guard tour software.

The Future Technology of Guard Tour System

Today, we already see advanced technology being used in the guard tour monitoring systems like:

  • The standard smartphones used in replace of guard tour devices. Guards can download apps and use QR tags as checkpoints.
  • Guard tour devices offering email and calling facilities
  • Real-time tracking using GPS
  • Real-time incident reporting

The future is here and we will observe these technologies being used in guard tour monitoring systems:

1. Advanced Navigation Facility:

Technology keeps getting updated every now and then. This has enabled the devices used in guard tour systems to become compact and handy than ever. In future, we shall see guard tour devices having smaller size and lighter weight than the ones used today. Humanized designs of pistol shape, wand shape and cell phone shape for these devices will be available.

Apart from size and design, a more advanced function is going to be implemented in these devices and that is navigation route. The devices will insist on its users to take a particular route by displaying the next checkpoint in the map. This will make tours easier for the guards.

2. RFID:

Though RFID or radio frequency identification is already prevalent in the market, its use will accelerate in the near future. It is an automated identification method which relies on storing and retrieving data remotely using RFID tags. RFID tag is a small device that identifies an animal, thing or human being using radio waves.

RFID tags each with a unique ID number can be installed along the routes. The guards on patrol can perform readings using a handy device. The recorded numbers of timestamps are then uploaded via adapters to a computer. This information can be used for printing, emailing or performance analysis purpose.

3. Biometric Identification Technology:

Guard tour systems are getting updated day by day and the day is near when devices having biometric identification technology will be used. The purpose of this technology is to identify the guard uniquely using biometric details like fingerprints. This will ensure the authenticity of the officers taking patrols.

A biometric technology incorporated into guard tour systems will eliminate the slightest chances of activities being recorded late, and leaking patrol activities. Also, it can eliminate the use of several devices as a single device can hold information of several officers without security risks as officers sign in to their accounts using their fingerprints.

4. Software getting simpler than ever:

A guard tour monitoring system may automate the process of patrolling but sometimes it so happens that the software being used is so complex that requires time and patience from security personnel to learn them and use it at the end of the day. However, this software system is getting simpler day by day.

We have already talked about how guards can simply download the apps via their mobile phones and use them as monitoring devices or for reporting purposes. In future, we shall see this system getting comparatively simple. Scanning and reporting shall also be done automatically without having to take any efforts by the guards.

Who knows where the future will lead to while developing the guard tour monitoring systems! The day is not far when we might also see robots instead of human guards securing properties and taking tours.
