In this article, we will discuss furan Analysis and its significance in deep. As the decay of paper is generated by oxidation, hydrolysis and pyrolysis; and count of polymerized glucose ring is termed as Degree of Polymerization (DP Value). This value (DP) is directly proportional to the tensile strength of the oil. DP Value increases, tensile strength decreases or vice versa. Even it is not possible to generate paper samples during transformer’s running operation. So, the actual condition of the transformer is predicted by the decomposition of cellulose products (2- Furfural). For this objective a regular analysis is necessary - Furan Analysis in Transformer Oil. The furan analysis in oil depends on various parameters: Oil temperature, Neutralization Value (Acidity), Sludge Content, Oil/Paper ratio, Type of oil (inhibited, non-inhibited) and Type of paper (thermo-stabilized, Non thermo-stabilized). There is no exact link between the above two parameters: Furan Content Analysis and Degree of Polymerization value cannot be figure out at present. Still, it is achievable to make a judgemental analysis based on the change of the furan readings; clue about the thermal conduction in solid insulation over a long time can be produced. On the basis of Furan parameters analysis, one can prepare the condition of the oil sample over the paper insulation. As we discussed earlier in this article as cellulose insulating material experiences degradation over the time, an aromatic compound is generated while this degradation termed as furan. On the particular 5 furans, testing is performed: 5H2F (5-hydroxymethl – 2-furaldehyde)—oxidation, 2FOL (2-furfurol)—moisture content, 2FAL (2-furaldehyde)—overheating, old fault, 2ACF (2-acetylfuran)—rare, lightning and 5M2F (5-methyl – 2-furaldehyde)—local, severe overheat. And now, Furan content are used to calculate an average expected degree of polymerization (DP) for the paper in the equipment. The calculated degree of polymerization is used to determine the percentage of solid insulation age remaining inside the transformer. The concentration of 2-furaldehyde in oil is usually the most prime indicator of paper decomposition, which in turn provides the information of kraft paper (the basic ingredients of Solid insulation), Kraft paper constitutions (Cellulose Fibers) and its Polymer chain or the glucose molecules line. The length of polymer chain indicates the life of Transformer as the manufacturing & operation break down the glucose chain and new paper in Transformer may have a long molecules chain. Hence, Transformer oil life can be determined by the Furan Analysis.
