Divinity Roxx, former bass player for Beyonce releases new single “We Are,” with album on the way

 

“We Are” was produced by Keith Harris of the Black Eyed Peas. He has produced and played drums on hit records for artists like Fergie, Will.i.Am and Estelle.

 

Divinity Roxx, former bass player for Beyonce and session musician for a number of stars, has released a new single “We Are” which is a prelude to Ms. Roxx’s full album “ImPossible” due out in April.

 

“My single is a tribute to one of my mentors and former Poetry for the People Professor at UC Berkeley, June Jordan. June was a leading force in bringing attention to women’s rights in apartheid South Africa. ‘We Are’ is a challenge to the whole world to step up and make a change.”

 

The song’s viral beat and heavy bass line merges hip hop, jazz and pop music to make a political statement that hearkens back to the protest songs of the late 1960s. When she rap-sings the line “Will love really conquer all? Is a gun really worth the fall?” an acute listener must pause for introspection to ask not can it happen, but “how can I make it happen?”

 

“’We Are’ is more than a song, it’s the message I want to give to the world. We are the only ones who can positively affect the change we want to see in this world,” Ms. Roxx said.

 

The animated video, full of popping bright colors and psychedelic shifts further links to the music of the late 60s and early 70s when the US was in turmoil over the Vietnam War. In this case, Roxx reacts to the war on her street and across the world. Protestors heralding a message of love and unity to conquer the fear and hate permeating our society fill the streets as one.

“We had more creative freedom with animation,” Ms. Roxx said. “It was important to me to depict black and white images, the absence of all colors, then splash the spectrum of colors through the line art in the video to portray the message. Parts of the montage show a stylized version of my face with colored shapes. I want this to remind people that we share this planet we live on and that we are all one. My favorite shots are the protest shots with hearts on the signs, instead of protesting, we are proclaiming that love can conquer all.”

 

Roxx states in the song, “Are we all so afraid of what we don’t understand that we’re willing to shoot without cause, what if you were that one, the one who can change the course, would you step into your greatness, would you? Can you feel the force?” Reading the words are powerful but listening raises the hair on your neck. Her driving voice in rapid syncopation leaves the listener little time to fully ingest her words. The song requires retrospection and introspection to fully grasp all the nuances and the profound meaning of it all.

As a prelude to the coming album ImPossible, Ms. Roxx hopes the song will inspire people to open their minds and hearts to the reality that music can heal. She encourages people to both listen to the single and full album and go out to make a difference. She is the spokeswoman for the Digital Music Academy Made By Girls Program and is set on making a difference in the lives of young women everywhere.

 

“We are. We can. We must. Change has to start somewhere and it has to start with someone. This is a rallying cry, an anthem and a flag to rally around. We are the ones who can make the change,” she said. “The question is, are you willing to step up.

 

Ms. Roxx has appeared at the Grammys, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Saturday Night Live and Good Morning America. She was also part of a special performance at the White House for President Barack Obama.

 

Despite these appearances with so many legendary and iconic figures, it is in her solo performance Divinity shines the brightest. Her ability to simultaneously play bass guitar while fronting her own band captivates audiences around the world. Her 2012 ‘Roxx Boxx Experience’ received critical acclaim as the ultimate funk mash-up of hip-hop and rock, featuring appearances by Grammy award winning artists and musicians Bootsy Collins and Killa Mike.

 

 

ImPossible promises jazzy riffs and dub bass lines, hip-hop and rock, funk and R&B sensibilities. Ms. Roxx said she is breaking down personal walls in this new project and blurring the box musicians are often placed in.

It’s a very personal message from me to the listener that real music and musicianship is alive, songs that touch people’s hearts and reflect their lives are out here, and we are singing them.  We Are Possible.
