Most Americans know that November contains an important holiday. A normal person will tell you that day is the fourth Thursday of the month. But gear-heads in places like Utah do most of their partying in November’s first week, at the world-famous SEMA auto show.

Dealers, drivers and aftermarket retailers gather in Las Vegas every year to swap stories and look at the cutting-edge technology on display. Considering that SEMA is one of the largest auto shows in the world, finding fast cars there usually isn’t a surprise. However, this year Ford dealers and enthusiasts were in for one regardless.

Modest Mustang

The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic cars ever built. Legions of fans in places like Utah spend their free time repairing classic models or searching for dealers that offer new ones. SEMA 2015 saw the release of a brand new Mustang. But this one is different.

Normal production Mustangs are fast, but this particular model is specifically built for drag racing. It’s crazy fast. Called the Ford Cobra Jet Mustang, the new model takes the engine of the famously powerful Cobra Jet and puts it in the body of the classic sports car. While it looks very much like a mild-mannered touring car, the new Cobra Jet is capable of speeds approaching 300 mph.

Reincarnation

Unfortunately for fans and dealers in Utah, the Cobra Jet Mustangs aren’t for general sale. In fact, Ford has announced that it only plans on producing 50 units, and the vehicles will be selling for around $100,000 each. The cars will likely enter the European racing circuit, where Ford has experienced much success in the past.

Ford continues to find new ways to make a good thing better. With its ceaseless innovation, the Mustang has found yet another incarnation as a blazing-fast drag car. Some fans will be left wondering how Ford’s engineers could possibly top this. But those who are familiar with the brand know that they’ll find a way.
