Football Is Back And On Your Doorstep At ISLAND

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

After Gareth Southgate’s young England Lions came so close to bringing the World Cup home this summer, football is back on everybody’s minds in our sunny corner of South East London here at ISLAND!

That is especially the case as the Premier League season is about to kick off again and our own local Eagles – the mighty Crystal Palace – once again take their place in the most popular football league competition in the world.

A must-not-miss chance to watch some of the world’s leading players

There are many advantages to Living In Croydon, but being only a mile or so from a top-flight football stadium with some of the most enthusiastic supporters in England is another one to boast about.

Selhurst Park holds just over 26,000 fans and is a handy half-hour walk from ISLAND. Just walk north up Whitehorse Road for approximately 20 minutes, before turning right into Holmesdale Road. Keep walking for another 10 minutes until the famous Holmesdale Road Stand looms over you to your left.

Fans can buy tickets online, over the phone or in person at the stadium, but it’s best to purchase in advance if there are any particularly big matches that you wish to attend. Once at Selhurst Park, there are lots of things to do before watching the game. There isClub Store, great food and drink and a fanzone where you can meet and mix with other fans before kick-off.

Why else should you be getting excited about the new season?

Your friends will be really jealous when they realise that this season, you’ll be living in Croydon, just a walk away from being able to watch some of the greatest footballers on the planet entertaining thousands.

Mo Salah and Sado Mane are among the first visitors of the season with Liverpool on 20th August, and Rafa Benitez brings his Newcastle United side in September. Big-spending Wolves then arrive in October, followed by Mesut Ozil and Arsenal on 27th October.

Title-chasing Tottenham with Harry Kane and Dele Ali then come south of the river on 10th November, before the Eagles see out 2018 with two home games in four days, starting with Cardiff City on Boxing Day and Eden Hazard’s Chelsea on 29th December.

Crystal Palace are a rarity in London – they’re a local team backed mainly by thousands of fans, principally living in Croydon or nearby, who support the team closest to them and their community – not the one with the most expensive players or the one that’s always on TV.

So this season, if you are a current or prospective ISLAND resident, why not take the short walk from our elegant 20-storey tower to Selhurst Park and support Roy Hodgson, Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon and all of the rest of the players? You’ll have a great time and have returned home before the players are out of the changing rooms!
