Foods For Healthy Skin

by Abhinav G. Movie Enthusiast

Everyone has struggled with skin problems, at one time or another. With so many beauty fads and products on the market, the search for clear skin can be very confusing. Here are some easy and inexpensive ideas to help your skin get clear (and stay clear!).

  • Do your laundry! Changing your sheets and bedding, especially your pillow cases, on a regular basis will help clear your skin up. At night, you sleep with your face pressed against you pillow, and against all the pore-clogging dust and oils that may be resting on the fabric.Try to change your pillow case at least once a week, and change your sheets every other week
  • Let your skin breathe at night! Take your makeup off every single night before you go to bed, no exceptions! At night, your body works to repair damage, including blemishes, and leaving all of that product on your face makes this impossible! Most makeup is not made to sit on the skin for 24 hours, so it will clog your pores and result in even more breakouts in the morning. Even if you don’t wear makeup, it is a good idea to wash your face every night so that your skin doesn’t absorb all the excess oils and dirt left over from the day. This will also reduce the grime on your pillowcases!
  • Pay attention to your hair products. Your hair is constantly coming into contact with you skin, so the products you use in your hair are also going to affect your face. Try to use water-based products when possible, and avoid ingredients that you know tend to irritate your skin (like alcohols and sulfates). It is aways a good idea to wash your hair before you go to bed, so that you aren’t sleeping with your face in the oil and products that have been in your hair all day (are you seeing a pattern?)

You can also achieve clearer skin by working from the inside out. There are a lot of foods that have cosmetic benefits, and are super delicious too!-Strawberries! Not only are they delicious, they contain compounds like biotin and the antioxidant ellagic acid, which helps keep skin youthful and glowing. Throw them in a delicious smoothie, or enjoy them in a bowl on their own!

  • Apple! Apples contain absorbic acid, which synthesizes collagen and helps repair your skin, as well as other damage in your body!
  • Nuts! Studies have shown correlation between mineral deficiencies and acne in many patients. Nuts pack high levels of nutritional minerals, like zinc and selenium, that are linked to healthy skin. Go for unsalted, unprocessed nuts when possible to minimize grease and maximize nutrition!
  • Whole grains! Blood sugar levels seem to be linked to skin health, so try swapping out processed ‘white’ carbs with whole grains like quinoa or brown rice. These more complex carbohydrates release energy at a steadier pace as they are digested, instead of giving you an immediate ‘sugar rush,’ and this helps regulate glucose levels. These foods are also rich in antioxidants and other vitamins that will help build healthier skin and a healthier you!

These are just a few of the habits and foods that can help you get clearer, healthier skin. Here are some more lifestyle tips that can help you banish the breakouts for good!

  • Drink water! This is the simplest and most effective way to get clearer skin. Water directly on your skin can be very drying, but water in your body provides balanced moisture and actually helps keep your skin clean! Drinking more water will help your whole body overall, and will help you drink less sodas and other sugary beverages that are bad for your beauty.
  • Keep it clean! It is a good idea to wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day (in the morning and again at bedtime). That way you will be applying you makeup to clean skin, without letting excess oils sit on your skin and clog your pores, and at night your skin will be able to breathe and your blemishes will be able to heal.
  • Don’t stress! Stress is the #1 cause of acne today. All of those hormones really affect your skin! Try to find time for yourself to decompress, whether that means going on a hike, curling up with a book, or practicing yoga. Lower stress levels will result in more regulated hormone levels, and your skin will thank you for it!
