Five Tips to Excel in Rummy

Rummy card game in India is not sheer luck; it is a combination of luck and efforts. Chances of getting a joker or the sequenced cards are beyond a player’s control but how you play the hands dealt is purely skill. Strategies and tricks are involved in Indian rummy games. 1. Identify your opponent’s game:

Be attentive; if you keep a watch on the cards discarded by your opponent you will not give them the card that they require. Neither the opponent should be able to guess your cards. So be very careful while drawing or discarding cards. Be completely attentive while picking up cards from the open deck as it may give your opponent an idea about your game. You can also at times draw the cards randomly from both decks to confuse the opponents.
 
2. Make utmost advantage of Joker:

In the game of rummy Joker holds a very important place. But its importance can be valued when the best use of it has been made. Many times it happens that you forget about the joker and continue waiting for the appropriate card thereby losing the game. One of the tricks is to use joker with high point sequence so that you have less points in hand. Focus on jokers for tactical moves.
 
3. Game withdrawal / Drop out: 

Drop out is a good option when you haven’t received good cards or when you are not self assured of winning. This game plan will help you in dealing with fewer points in the next game. You would be tempted to play on; but you need to evaluate your cards properly and take a decision to continue the game or to drop out.
 
4. Gather smart cards & clear your high points cards 

One must discard the high points card like face cards and Aces at the earliest ( if they are of less importance). This helps you to score less points if your opponent has declared rummy. Also gather smart cards which can be of multiple utility and of fewer points. For example 5, it can be either used as a sequence with 3, 4 or 6, 7 or can be used in a set. 
  
5. Re-evaluate:

Try to make pure rummy sequence as soon as possible because that is compulsory needed for show. Keeping one set of cards for long and waiting for those particular cards to blend could be risky especially those with high points. You must continuously monitor your cards and evaluate them. Make changes as and when required. But the rearrangement should be such that it doesn’t complicate or make the game more difficult to play.
