Five Common Emergencies And Problems Experienced By Dogs

by Johnsons E. Content Writer

When your pet is sick, it's time for a veterinary emergency appointment. Since pets can't talk, it may take longer to determine what's wrong, so don't wait to get your pet the medical treatment they require.

In order to help you determine the most complete details possible about common emergencies and problems experienced by dogs, we gathered a list of five of the most popular pet emergency situations.

Severe Bleeding

This is the number one emergency, and so many people assume that an animal's first aid should be performed at home. If the bleeding is serious or lasts longer than five minutes, it must be reviewed by a vet. The fur may be hiding a larger problem, or the pet may require stitches to recover without infection. The cut might be deeper than it looks, or there could be internal bleeding that requires surgery.

Respiratory Distress

Your dog may suffer breathing problems for a variety of reasons. One of the most common explanations is due to choking. Your dog may swallow a toy accidentally, causing their airways to be blocked and causing them to stop breathing. Respiratory distress is often a matter of urgency, and you should run to your vet as immediately as possible.

Your dog may have gagging and may have blue, grey or purple gums. They can also start gasping for breath, in which case you can run to the clinic to get support from them.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke happens when a pet can no longer control the temperature of its own body and hold it at a reasonable level. This is the consequence of overheating, for instance, when dogs are left in a hot car or in a greenhouse. Organ damage can happen very rapidly as a result of heat stroke, and it can be fatal, unfortunately. But cooling them down too quickly can potentially make your pet worse, so always immediately seek advice from your vet.

Vomiting And/Or Diarrhea

Vomiting and diarrhea are common problems in dogs, and although there may be symptoms of severe illness, the majority of cases are mere stomach upsets that normally resolve within 24 hours. If your dog develops any other symptoms, such as lethargy or fatigue, appears to be in pain, or vomiting or diarrhea involves blood or lasts for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian right away. If your dog has a chronic health condition such as diabetes and starts vomiting, we wouldn't suggest waiting for 24 hours—seek veterinary care as soon as possible.

Fleas And Ticks

Fleas, as you're probably already aware, is another thing that almost any dog would have in their lifetime. They can be knocked over very quickly with the right medicine and you can find a range of items for sale in your local pet shop.

Ticks, however, are very dangerous. Ticks like the paralysis tick found on the coast of Australia can lead to serious health problems for your dog, including blood poisoning and sometimes even death.

You may also purchase i-STAT Alinity v Analyzer, which provides a range of disposable, single-use cartridges that include analyte variations for acid-base analysis, blood gases, chemistry, hematology, electrolytes, and certain specialty tests such as lactate. These cartridges are programmed with parameters that can provide insight into the condition of the patient, based on the clinical situation.

If your pet has any of these signs or their behavior scares you, please do not hesitate to call your veterinarian.
