Five Challenges of Modern Beach House Design

by Yours Tyleau Webmaster

Living on the northern beaches offers great opportunities for outdoor living, terrific views and a healthy and invigorating lifestyle. But you’ll only gain the full benefits if your beach house is designed and built to take full advantage.

As experienced Northern Beaches builders, we know how much residents value the environment and their enjoyment of it. This brings a whole host of challenges that we regularly overcome so that we consistently deliver the dream home that people long for.

1. Making the Most of the View

Living near the northern beaches means you have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and your home should take advantage of that. The main living areas and outdoor spaces need to give access to that scenery, with extensive glazing to the main rooms and external areas that allow uninterrupted views.

At the same time, you don’t want to spoil the view for other properties, not least because there are local council policies that ensure views are shared. All our beach house designs, therefore, will provide you with the best view while not spoiling it for others.

2. Maximising Site Features

Many northern beach sites slope steeply towards the sea, affording great views of the coast but presenting logistical challenges in moving between levels. The answer is often to have the main living and eating areas at the same level as the garage and driveway so that food and other provisions don’t have to be taken down several flights of stairs.

Using a site’s features constructively can ensure maximum privacy, make the best use of natural light and reduce the need to frequently move between levels.

3. Enabling the Outdoor Lifestyle

Northern beach living is mainly about experiencing the outdoors. To do that successfully, homes need to make the transition between indoor and outdoor areas quite seamless. They also need to provide storage for outdoor equipment, exterior showers so sand isn’t walked into the house and plenty of drying space for wet beach gear.

4. Ensuring Sustainability

Beach houses should blend in with the beautiful surroundings rather than detract from them. They need to use natural materials such as weathered timber and take as little from the environment as possible. That means using energy-efficient cooling, heating and lighting, having provision for recycling and installing glazing that keeps the property cool with natural light.

5. Providing Functionality

Like any home, the property needs to work efficiently and make living there as pleasant as possible. We’ll design the layout, so rooms link effectively and movement flows properly.

Whilst style is important, functionality is equally significant and, as builders in Northern Beaches, we know how crucial it is to make all elements work together. Consequently, we will ensure your dream home at least meets all your expectations.
