Fire extinguishers
Fire
extinguishers are very essential tools, especially in putting out both small
and huge fires, or at least containing a fire until fire fighters arrive.
Offices, homes and different institutions have different types of
extinguishers, and members are often educated on how to use them, and the risks
that may be involved in putting out small, huge and developing fires. However,
they remain the most essential safety tools, making it mandatory for people to
understand the various extinguisher types that are available.
Among the various
types of extinguishers available, water extinguishers are very common. These
are the most widespread types of extinguishers, and are cheap too. They are
used for putting out class A fires, those that are caused by solid substances
such as pieces of paper, plastic and wood.
Foam extinguisher
is another type, and these are relatively more expensive compared to the water
extinguishers but they are versatile too. They are used for both class A and B
fires, whereby class B fires are those that are caused by flammable liquids
like paraffin, oil and petrol. They normally spray foam, but are not
recommended for fires that involve electricity.
Another type is
the dry powder extinguisher, commonly referred to as the multi-purpose fire
extinguisher. These are used to put outclasses A, B and C fires, whereby class
C fires are those that are caused by flammable gases such as methane, butane
and propane. Though they are safer, it is dangerous to try these extinguishers
if you have not isolated the supply of the gas. Similarly, when they are used
indoors, the dry powder emitted can obscure eyes, impairing sight for some
time.
Carbon dioxide
extinguishers are also very common, and they are the most ideal when dealing
with fires which involve electricity or electrical appliances. These can also
be used to quench class B fires that are caused by liquids, but they do not
have post-fire security measures, which means the fire can re-ignite.
Wet chemical
extinguishers also exist, though they are not common. These are used in
handling class F fires, which are caused by fat and cooking oil. There is a
special extinguisher too used for handling metal fires, especially those
involving sodium, lithium, aluminium and magnesium.
However, whether
you are at home or at work you need more than just a fire extinguisher. There
are a lot more sophisticated but safe installations that can secure you from
accidental fires. Appliances such as fire doors and fire panels are vital.
There are special
extinguisher lessons as well as regular checks that are conducted on hydrant
systems to ascertain the safety of a place. It takes the services of a
specialized institution to do some of these installations, checks and even give
tutorials on the right fire safety measures.
Local Fire is one
such firm, specializing in all fire safety measures. You can invite them to
assess any enterprise, give recommendations and do all the safety installations
at a reasonable cost. You will also receive tutorials and certification, which
is required by any council. Find them online at http://www.localfire.com.au and
your safety will be assured.
