Finding Freedom Through Grief

Anyone who has suffered severe disappointment, heartbreak or the death of someone close to them will have experienced the depth of pain that accompanies grief and will know that the grieving process is not to be taken lightly.

From both our own and others' experiences, we may hold certain beliefs about grieving - such as thatgrief is something to 'get over', or that ‘time will heal’ – but while there will almost always be an element of truth in such beliefs, they do not paint the whole picture.

Grieving is both universal and unique but what many of us may not associate with the process of grieving is the sense of freedom that can come with it – freedom from aspects of our pasts, freedom to create our futures. Accessing and engaging with our creativity is one way we can help ourselves or be helped to get through the grieving process.

Loss And Creativity

Some of our greatest cultural riches have come about as a result of grief. Homer's Iliad, for example, is a tragedy; the pyramids of Giza were burial mounds andthe loss of the Garden of Eden iscentral to Christian texts. Humanity owes a great debt to heartbreak.

Loss and creativity are key components of what it means to be human, so some clear linkage between the two should not come as a great surprise.

Harvard University lecturer and author Dr Shelley Carson has suggested that creativity may be one of the best responses to the death of someone close to you. She emphasises that everyone has the capacity to be creative, adding: "Some of us just express it more robustly."

Clinical psychologist Henry Seiden, PhD agrees with Carson’s assessment and has declared that "creativity is the essential response to grief."

The creative act, after all, is about reaching deep within oneself;it is a process that can be extremely healing in that it enablesus to express ourselves authentically and become more compassionate both towards ourselves and towards others.
