Figuring Out the Wardrobe Design for Your Bedroom

by Rohan Sharma Lalco Interiors
Choosing the right kind of bedroom wardrobe can be tricky! Just like the bed, one needs to factor in the size and other comfort factors here too. However, there are quite a few more things that could be pretty puzzling while choosing a wardrobe.
->Should the wardrobe be closed or open shelved?
->Should it be a separate furniture or built into the wall?
->How many racks, segments and cabinets do I need?

Today one can find a vast array of designs, sizes and structural options for a bedroom wardrobe.

1.Customized Wardrobes vs. Mass produced Wardrobes:
If your bedroom is on the smaller side of size, you may want to install a built-into-wall type of wardrobe, instead of installing a separate structure. You may also want to custom design a wardrobe around the extra spaces near the window nooks to further save space. Personalized wardrobes can be built to incorporate such ledges and nooks, and you could even work out an extra reading nook out of it.
However, while opting for customized built-in bedroom wardrobes, there are a few things to be kept in mind.
•You must remember that built-in wardrobes are never portable. So, a simpler lifting and shifting option for such a wardrobe, during any future move of home, is simply out of question. However, built-in wardrobes give you the complete freedom of design, spacing and customizing compartments. It can save a lot of space, and can be made from your choice of material, color, finish, and also as per your budget.
•The other disadvantage of a custom designed built-in is that it takes time to build one. Also, you have to be ready for a phase of woodwork and carpentry to go on inside your house, along with all the noise and mess it involves.

2.Closed vs. Open Shelves Wardrobes:
If you’re particular about maintaining a neat look of a room, closed wardrobes will be more suited to your need than an open shelved wardrobe. In such wardrobes, one can always stash the clothes, and other items, behind closed doors, that gives a tidier look to the bedroom. However, some people prefer open racks. They prefer displaying all their favorite clothes and accessories in an open shelved bedroom wardrobe.

3.Compartments of your Wardrobe:
Wardrobe compartments are of much significance as far as choosing the right bedroom wardrobe is concerned. You will need one or more vertically larger shelves to hang clothes on hangers, several shorter shelves for stacking up folded clothes and accessories. You may also need certain drawers for socks, belts, undergarments and so on, and a couple of secret cabinets to hide away expensive trinkets.

4.Mirror on Wardrobe:
Whether to install full length mirrors on the bedroom wardrobe door, or let it pass, is another important decision. If you want to make your bedroom appear more spacious, you can install mirrors on the wardrobe doors to reflect backspace, giving your bedroom an expansive look. On the other hand, if you’re particular, or even finicky, about certain FengShui Do's and don'ts, then you might prefer avoiding mirrors mounted on a bedroom wardrobe that faces the bed, no matter how practically or aesthetically suitable it may sound.

The color, timbre, height and size of a bedroom wardrobe are some other important things to ponder on before figuring out the exact design. So go on and get that perfect wardrobe that not only serves its purpose but also fits in with your bedroom’s style quotient.
