Fight the Summers- Increase your Car Battery Life
The Indian summers can be really harsh and while you have the air conditioning to put you through the summers, your car needs a little extra. Contrary to what people believe, the summer heat can cut short your battery's life.
Your car's battery is not gifted with some extra power. Therefore, it needs to be replaced at some point or the other. There is an array of reasons behind your battery’s life being shortened, like excessive heating or overcharging. In extreme summers, the battery fluid evaporates, which damages the internal structure of the battery. Whereas in winters, the engine oil becomes thicker, because of which it becomes difficult to get your vehicle started.

If you want to extend your car’s battery’s life, keep these points in mind:
Charge your car’s battery properly. However, don’t overcharge it. Both undercharging and overcharging can damage it, so make sure that it’s charged just right.
In the long run, there are chances of dirt accumulating on the battery. This settled dirt soon starts serving as a conductor, draining your battery power. Therefore, it’s important to keep the top of your car battery clean of dust or dirt. On the other hand, with time, corrosion on the battery surface can also occur which serves as an insulator, blocking the flow of current.
If the liquid level in the battery is low, add some distilled water (avoid using tap water), and make sure that the plates are perfectly immersed. Check if the plates have enough fluid inside, this will help you prevent the chances of sulfidation, thus preventing the chances of battery explosion.
Add water in measured quantities, filling the battery to the top can lead to overflowing of the solution, which can ruin your battery.
Every time you are replacing your car battery, remember that the new battery has a higher rating or the same rating as the previous battery.
Switching your car engine on and off unless really needed can be damaging to your car’s engine. Other factors that can damage your car engine and battery are weather conditions, the car’s age, and mileage etc. Plus, your car’s entertainment system or connectivity elements also draw electrical energy to run, which in turn shortens your battery life.
If your car’s headlights or the lights on the inside are not glowing to their full capacity, or the other car accessories collapse for seemingly no reason, then it’s time to replace your car battery. Also, make sure that you are getting your car checked by a local mechanic on a regular basis.
There is no doubt that the Indian summers are harsher as compared to other countries. So make sure that you take all the necessary steps to keep your car battery safe and run long. Otherwise you might find yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere some day, with your car battery dead. In case you are buying a used car, make it a point to inspect its battery before you seal the deal.
