The global influence in India is coeval with an ever increasing interest in food, art, culture, literature, cinema, clothes moving slightly away from the traditional Indian offerings of the same nature.  Consumerism, materialism and increasing disposable income of Indians have developed a craving for being unique and trendy in their lifestyles.  The acclaim of western dresses, particularly by women, is one of the most visible and identifiable outcomes of this phenomenon.  Off late, the Indians seems to have started focusing more on their appearances and how the dress up. The style and fashion quotient of the Indians particularly the middle-class segment has considerably gone up.  This transformation is witnessed not only in the metros but in Tier II and Tier III cities as well.

Coming on to fashion and couture the easy availability of wider options for all tastes and budgets has had a compelling effect in India.  The mall culture in India that started gradually in Tier I cities have kind of erupted in Tier II cities of India and it looks the Tier III cities will sooner have their own versions of malls to shop around.  This affluence of shopping venues has boosted the acclaim of western dresses.  For the trend that was once limited to jeans, t-shirts, trousers and long skirts has now extended to miniskirts, shorts, spaghetti tops and the likes at least in the metros.  And without being judgmental, it’s considered as a mark of being trendy, upmarket and modern, welcoming glares and the desired attention.

In fact, the presence of major international fashion clothing brands in India further signifies the growing market of western dresses.  Although the popularity of western wear for men was always there, its only in the last few years or so that the demand in women’s category has increased. Specifically, the last 3-4 years have seen a surge in demand for women’s western wear accounting for almost 30% to 32% of the total market of women wear.  The Indian players of this area foresee a huge demand in the near future, the desire to look better and dress up in a contemporary style is pegging it further up.  Western dresses for women in India have found a new way of gratifying in the form of fusion dresses which is about gracefully mixing and matching the Indian traditional dresses with western outfits. These fusion dresses mingle the two styles in the form of design, pattern or style.

This is one category of dresses that will surely provide the desired impetus to the industry.
