Before settling for any one NDT method, one should first evaluate various factors. This will make it easy for you to find out the correct method to be used on the material. This evaluation will also help you to choose the right equipment to be used depending on the technique. The following are the major factors to take into consideration.

First of all, you should bear in mind that it is hard to find one method which will solve all your problems. This implies that it is impossible to come up with one NDT technique that will discover all types of defects on your materials. Therefore, when choosing a technique, look at the common defects that your materials mostly experience. Next, consider the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques that expose those defects.

Secondly, look at the extent at which your operations will be disrupted depending on the method you choose. For example, if you operate a large production plant, you should only go for a technique that will not hamper the production process. This is because, there is no product which is perfect; every one of them has minor defects that shouldn’t concern you much. Therefore, when choosing a technique, go for one which will not flush out all your products as defects; rather select one which will remove only the affected items.

Thirdly, decide where the non destructive test will be carried out. For example, will you perform the test as the products move along the chain of production or will you conduct it at the very end. If you are examining the items at the end, then you can choose a technique such as ultrasound testing. If however you perform the non destructive test midway through the process, you will have to look at the right method to use.

Next, evaluate whether you require more than one method for the tests. This may be the case if you are facing different types of defects which cannot be exposed by a single technique. Once you find out that you require two techniques for your materials, you will be in a better position to decide which magnaflux machine to use. This means that you can choose to buy both Magnaglo fluorescent and Zyglo penetrants.

In addition, consider the cost implications of going for one method over the other. In the back of your mind, you should have a set amount that you are aiming to spend in non destructive testing. This implies that even if you find a suitable technique that is ideal for your conditions but is expensive, you will most likely end up foregoing it. To avoid this, when you are evaluating the different techniques that you can use, look at the various prices as well. You will therefore end up with a fine balance between your budget and the appropriate technique for you.

Finally, always consider how easy the non destructive test method is. It is recommended that you go for a simple method that will be easy to understand instead of an intricate process that requires you to hire somebody else on top of the expense you incurred buying the equipment.
