by Dr. Makhdum Kazi Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

What is facial trauma?

Have you ever heard about soft tissue injuries like bruises or fractures of facial bones? Yes, they are termed facial trauma.

In simple terms, facial trauma can be described as any physical trauma to the face. There can be bruises, cuts, lacerations on the face, or even fractures on nasal parts, jaw, and eye orbit.

It is also known as maxillofacial trauma which leads to disfigurement and failure in the proper functioning of the affected part.

It is necessary to get appropriate treatment within time.

Signs and symptoms of maxillofacial trauma

The most common symptoms of oral and maxillofacial trauma are pain, bleeding, and swelling of the facial muscles.

Signs of facial fractures are changed in the orientation of the teeth (occlusion) and bleeding.

Quite often the patient is unable to move the jaws and/or the mouth after the trauma.

Such injuries mostly occur after an accident, so the other parts of the body are also affected and the treatment is done in a team with experts from other specialties like orthopedics and general surgery.

At our surgical unit, patients can get the most promising facial trauma treatment.

Facial trauma treatment and procedure.

The severity of the degree of facial injury dictates the extent of maxillofacial trauma treatment.

Our maxillofacial surgeon believes that before going into any treatment, it is necessary to know a few things, which are, the reason for maxillofacial trauma, any difficulty in movement of the jaw, eye, and facial muscles, the minute unwanted particle stuck on the face, and numbness of the facial parts such as forehead, nose, cheeks, etc.

If in case the patient has accidentally swallowed blood or any particle, then immediate maxillofacial trauma treatment is performed, so that the air passage is clear and there are no complications in breathing.

Most of the time, trauma can be very severe as it causes extreme pain, the patient is unable to move the jaw and the speech is impaired. If there is no displacement or cracks in the bone, there is no need for any facial injury surgery. In the case of displacing a facial fracture, facial fracture surgery is to be performed immediately.
