Facebook Hashtags? Seriously?

Guess what, your favorite hashtags (i.e. #) which were popular on Twitter are now being introduced in the world’s most popular social networking system, Facebook! That’s right! Quite honestly, I was a bit shocked, too. So now you can communicate more easily and widely on Facebook.

How did it happen!

Apparently, hashtags were already being used on Facebook by the users and now facebook intends to merely make those hashtags clickable. So next time you see a hashtag on Facebook, let’s say something like #Syriawar, you will not only be able to click it but communicate with other facebook users about it. That really broadens your horizons, doesn’t it? Recently, the Oscars caused more than 66 million people to like, comment and post about this event. And please, let’s not say Facebook “copied” Twitter because as I mentioned the Facebook users themselves started this whole thing.

Is it cool or what?

That definitely is a moot point because hey, I, too, am still deciding if it’s really cool for me. Before the introduction of hashtags the facebook users could only share most of their thoughts and experiences within the circle of their friends. However, hashtags now allow people to communicate on a broader horizon. So now whatever topic you discuss while adding a hashtag you are discussing it with almost the whole world! Amazing, right? Coming to the not-so-cool part about it, hashtag would mean more public conversations which leads to less privacy. Some people may not be comfortable with the idea of sharing their mind with the whole world but still find the urge to use the amazingly attractive hashtags. What to do? Well, unlike Twitter, on Facebook you can reduce your audience to your hashtags with the help of drastic security settings. Doesn’t facebook just always take care of us?

When’s the fun starting?

Apparently, this maddeningly amazing categorization tool was started on 12th June, 2013 and but by far the company is allowing only 20 percent of the users to enjoy hashtags. Eventually, the use of these will be increased and more people will be able to click hashtags but according to Facebook, it will take a few weeks.

Who copied who?

Now that Facebook has announced official implementation of hashtags, people as usual have started to criticize this social network media. Some argue it’s a”twitter thing” and has been copied while some say Twitter copied IRC. Some say Google+ is being copied by Facebook. No offence, but that just really doesn’t matter. Whatever Facebook is doing is clearly legal because it’s not been sued or anything. What matters is that we finally have the option of hashtags on facebook and its OFFICIAL!

The whiny babies:

So, a while ago I was reading some comments on a random site about these facebook hashtags and I came across some really whiny people who were complaining about this new change to facebook. Now if you don’t like it you leave facebook; simple. Personally, I think, the excitement will not last longer because people have this habit of criticizing everything now days. However, it doesn’t change the fact that facebook has tried to bring a change anticipated by millions of people so cheers to them!
