Extruding Metal for Your Product Requirements
by Hoyt Corporation Hoyt CorporationWhen
extruding metals for precision parts, a rigorous process must be followed. The
right metal alloy has to be identified and tested even before the processing
begins. Along the way, the proper certifications need to be recorded and
associated with the product. As the processes of heating, extruding, and
cooling are followed, the product needs to maintain its integrity and emerge
capable of meeting its intended purpose. To find out more details about all of
this please read the following blog.
Extruding Metal
There are
two basic ways to form metal, usually copper, for creating electrical parts.
Forging involves putting the metal under tremendous pressure to create the
desired part, based on a die form. Extrusion involves pushing the copper
through a die to create the desired shape of the part. It can be a hot
extrusion or cold extrusion, but there is usually some amount of heat applied to
increase the ductility of the copper.
Because of
the ability to create complex die forms, extrusion provides more flexibility
for creating parts. Extrusion also wastes less material, so therefore it's more
economical. Despite heating up the raw material and exerting pressure in the
process, the integrity of the metal is generally maintained. Also, parts have
an excellent surface finish, so there is less need for post-production
machining.
There are
several different kinds of extrusion processes, each depending on the desired
output and die type. These are discussions you need to have with your
manufacturer to understand which method will work best to meet your goals.
