Explore the Four Generations of the Kia Sorento
The Kia Sorento is a mid-size SUV that was first produced in 2002 and initially introduced as a 5-seat SUV, but later turned into a three-row 7-seater crossover.
First Generation
The first-generation Kia Sorento was revealed in 2002 with a body-on-frame structure that improved its towing and off-roading capabilities. The Sorento was available in two trim levels: the base LX and the high-end EX with standard features including an eight-speaker audio system, air conditioning, power-adjustable seat, power door locks and windows, keyless entry, dual front airbags, side-impact SRS airbags, aluminum-alloy wheels, and a split-folding rear seat.
The Sorento came with 3.3-liter V6 petrol and 3.8-liter V6 petrol as well as an optional 2.5-liter turbo-diesel engine, mated with either a 4-speed and 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.
Second Generation
The second-generation Sorento was introduced in 2009 with a new unibody platform and was available in four trims: LX, EX, and the premium SX. It also offers new exterior changes including the Kia‘s corporate Tiger Nose grille and twin round headlights. Standard features include a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, satellite radio, cruise control, leather upholstery, keyless ignition, automatic headlights, backup sensors, and 18-inch wheels.
The Sorento is fitted with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 175 hp and a 3.5-liter V6 with 276-hp petrol engines or a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 183 hp and 2.2-liter 4-cylinder with 197 hp diesel engines.
Third Generation
The third-generation Kia Sorento was released in 2014 with 189 inches longer, 0.2 inches wider and the ground clearance was reduced by 0.6 inches. The cabin is spacious with enough room for seven passengers and cargo. Standard features include an 8.0-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Around-View Monitor, Bluetooth connectivity, Infinity premium audio, real-time traffic info, and a next-gen Kia UVO eServices feature.
The Sorento is equipped with either a 3.3-liter Lambda II V6 with 290 hp, 2.4-liter GDI 4-cylinder with 190 hp, 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder with 240 hp, or a turbocharged 2.2-liter CRDi diesel engine with 199 hp. These engines come with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
2020 – Present
The current generation of Kia Sorento was introduced in 2020 with a 1.4 inches longer wheelbase and an overall length extended by 0.4 inches. The new design is edgier which features a creased bonnet, an electric-razor grille, and LED headlights. While at the back, its two-part LED taillights pivot 90 degrees, a big rear window, and metallic fender flags on the sides. The 2020 Sorento cabin has more space than before and the passengers in the second and third rows will surely experience a more comfortable experience. While the cargo area can handle up to 2124 liters of cargo.
Standard features include an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, Kia’s Uvo software, steering-wheel heating, and climate functions. The Sorento is powered by a 2.5-liter petrol engine with 191 hp, a turbocharged 2.5-liter petrol engine with 281 hp, or a turbocharged 1.6-liter with an electric motor hybrid. All engines are attached either with a 6-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission.
