Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services Examination, also known as UPSC IAS Exam, every year for the recruitment of Officers to premium positions of the Country. Phase 1:     IAS 2016 Syllabus : Preliminary Examination

IAS Preliminary Examination is known as CSAT, Civil Services Aptitude Test aimed at testing the candidate’s analytical and reasoning ability
examinee's ability to tackle analytical and reasoning questions.It is a screening test with multiple choice questions only.

IAS Preliminary Examination is comprised of two papers-

  • Paper I - General Studies   
  • Paper II - Aptitude       

Syllabus for Paper I - General Studies   

  • Current events (National and International)
  • History of India
  • Geography of the world (Physical, Social, Economic)
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution
  • Economic and Social Development
  •  General Issues (Environmental Ecology, Bio-Diversity, Climate change etc.)
  • General Science

Syllabus for Paper II - Aptitude       

  •  Comprehension
  •  Interpersonal Skills
  •  Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability
  •  Decision making and problem solving
  •  General mental ability
  •  Basic Numeracy
  •  Data Interpretation
  •  Comprehension Skill (English)

Phase 2 :  IAS 2016 Syllabus :  Main Examination

IAS Main Examination will entirely be a subjective exam aimed at testing the in-depth knowledge of the candidates . Main Examination is comprised of 9 papers with two qualifying papers.

  • Paper I  -  Any Indian Language -   To be attempted by the candidates  in any modern Indian Language
  • Paper II - English


* Paper I and Paper II will be qualifying in nature only and whatever marks obtained by the candidates in these two paper will not be considered in the creation of MERIT.

  • Paper III -  Essay -  To be attempted in a language of the candidate’s choice
  • Paper IV - General Studies 1 (Indian Heritage/Culture, World History & Geography)
  • Paper  V - General Studies 2 (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations)
  • Paper VI - General Studies 3 (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security & Disaster Management)
  • Paper VII - General Studies 4 (Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude)
  • Paper VIII - Optional 1 (Of your choice)
  • Paper IX  - Optional 2 (Of your choice)

List of the Subjects from which the candidates will be able to choose their optional subjects based on their preference-
