Bihar boasts of a rich historical past. It has always been the center of attention for historians from ages. Some of the great religions of the world like Buddhism and Jainism have also started from Bihar. Thus, it is obvious that the state has some of the richest and varied arts and crafts. Rich heritage of arts and crafts have also been preserved. The unique features in the handicrafts reflect creativity and beauty. Some of the most popular handicrafts of Bihar include:


Madubani paintings- This form of art got its name from Mithila where it was widely practiced by women. Originally, the paintings were done on freshly plastered mud walls, but now it is done on clothes, canvas and handmade paper. The paintings mostly depict Hindu religious figures and nature.

Wood carvings- This form of art became famous during the Mauryan period. Wooden houses were made from carvings. Bihar is one of the few states now where wood carvings are done with table tops, wall plaques, pens and paper cutters. These are inlaid with different materials like ivory, stag horn, etc.


Pottery- Bihar also has a rich of clay works. Beautiful earthen utensils and tiles are made of clay with lots of artistic designs and paintings on them. Earthen statues of Gods and goddesses can also be found.

Sikki works-Sikki is a weed or grass found on the river beds. These unnecessary riverweeds can be turned into decorative items. Beautiful wares and toys can be made out of this grass. After the drying the grasses, these are stitched and made into various shapes like tortoise, birds, snakes, etc. Several colors are also applied on them to make them look more appealing.

Zari works- This kind of art is also famous in Bihar. Some of the finest zari works can be found in pillow covers, shamianas, table clothes, covers for musical instruments, sari borders, blouse pieces and others.

Textile printing- The state specializes in this art form and products such as churnis, saris are made with different motifs. 


Jewelry- Gold and silver jewelry is also an important handicraft of this state. The goldsmiths and silversmiths are known for making artistic and beautiful ornaments. Moreover, kundan works in silver jewelry is also associated with high degree of concentration and skill and is a special art in Bihar.
