Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. This day means a lot for couples who are in love with each other. Celebrated on 14th February, Valentine’s Day is the most awaited day for couples throughout the world. Lovers wait for this day to express their love for their partners through gifts. So much so that an entire week is dedicated to celebrating those in love. Couples celebrate valentine’s week with great fervor and enthusiasm.

Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?

 

Valentine’s Day existed much before the time of St. Valentine. In ancient Rome, there used to be a holiday in the mid of February. This day celebrated fertility and it is believed that men and women were paired on this day as part of a ritual. 

St. Valentine’s Day used to be feast day in the Catholic religion. This day was celebrated as the martyrdom day of St. Valentine. There are different legends of St. Valentine on whom this holiday is based. The one which explains the celebration of the day of love on 14th February is that St. Valentine was a Roman priest who used to perform weddings of the Roman soldiers who were forbidden to marry. St. Valentine used to wear a ring bearing cupid on one of his fingers. This was a symbol of love according to him. This ring helped soldiers recognize him. He also handed out paper cars to soldiers to remind them of love.
