by West Road Customs Automotive

There are a lot of questions about the MOT test, especially from those who are taking it for the first time. An MOT in Peterhead can be a confusing affair for nouveau motorists. So, here’s an attempt to clear all the common questions regarding this mandatory test.

Where Can You Take This Test?

There are primarily two options for you to take your MOT Test in Peterhead:

  1. Council test centres

  2. DVSA authorised independent garages

Most councils have their own test centres where they carry out MOT tests for public vehicles like buses and taxis. They are legally required to open these test centres for the general public. Do keep in mind that council centres do not perform any repairs.

DVSA authorised garages, on the other hand, offer comprehensive MOT services ranging from pre-MOT checks to post-MOT repairs.

What is the Cost?

The government has fixed the maximum amount that a test centre can charge for taking MOT in Peterhead.

For passenger cars and other class 4 vehicles, it is £54.85. However, you are likely to get the test done for much less at several test centres around the country as they offer competitive pricing, usually ranging between £30-35.

What are the New Changes?

On May 20, 2018, the DVSA announced a set of changes to the MOT guidelines. Some of the significant changes are listed below.

New Inclusions: Tyre inflation pressure, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), brake fluid, reversing lights, fluid leaks, daytime running lights, headlight washers.

Change in Category: In all, there are five categories now:

  • Dangerous

  • Major

  • Minor

  • Advisory

  • Pass

The first two categories are MOT failures whereas the other three indicate that you have cleared your MOT Test Peterhead.

Who is Exempt from MOT in Peterhead?

There are a few vehicles that are exempt from taking the MOT:

  • Classic cars which are more than 40 years old; before the May 2018 changes, it was cars that were registered before 1960.

  • Tractors

  • Electric goods vehicles registered before March 1, 2015

How Can You Increase Your Chances of Clearing It?

A vast majority of MOT failures is caused by minor issues. You should get your vehicle inspected at West Road Customs before the test to increase your chances of clearing it. They have skilled technicians proficient at various automobile repairs such as brakes, and batteries repair and replacements.

In particular, the following parts cause over 90% of all MOT failures:

  • Tyres

  • Driver’s view of the road

  • Suspension

  • Brakes

  • Lights

  • Exhaust

What Happens If You Fail?

The test centre shall grant you a VT30 Refusal of an MOT test certificate. You may appeal the result within ten working days. Otherwise, you must get your car repaired ASAP and retake the test. If you take it at the same test centre within the next ten working days, they will only charge a partial fee for the retest.

Ignoring the test results is not a good idea since you may be fined, handed penalty points against your license and even banned from driving for a specific period.
