The endotracheal tube, also known as the ET tube is used to maintain a patent airway and mechanically ventilate patients. It serves to provide oxygen and inhaled gases to the lungs and protects the lungs from contamination, such as gastric contents or blood.
Use of Endotracheal Tube?
- It is used when a patient is unable to breath by himself/herself to give him a breathing support.
- It can also used if something like pen cap, rapper etc. got stucked in trachea then it can used in foreign object removal.
- endotracheal tube may also be placed to help prevent stomach contents from entering the airways in cases of a massive bleed in the esophagus, stomach or intestine.
Endotracheal Tube Intubation
Endotracheal Intubation (EI) is often an emergency medical procedure that can help save a life when someone can't breathe. The tube keeps the trachea open so air can get to the lungs. Intubation is usually performed in a hospital during an emergency or before surgery.
Endotracheal Tube Insertion
The ET tube may be put in with a stiff device to help guide it into place. The tube will be put into the patient's mouth, past his vocal cords, and into his trachea. Once the tube is in place, the stiff guiding device will be removed. The tube may have a balloon at the end that is filled with air to hold it in place.
