India has been leading as the largest producer of farmed shrimp since few years now. However, farmers are concerned about vannamei feed price keeping in mind the current fluid situation on international demand for its shrimp and lower prices than in 2019. What remains a major factor to consider is how to make the production chain more cost efficient.

Since the market price can’t be controlled, it is necessary to regulate the cost of production. A survey on the production of shrimp and their production cost concludes that in 2019, the average cost of production was reported at INR170/kg (USD 2.42/kg) for size 70/kg. As ex-farm prices for size 70/kg shrimp(April to September 2019) was INR248/kg (USD3.5/kg),farmers could secure good profits. However, as the ex-farm prices dropped below that in 2019 with lower demand and now to INR225/kg (USD3.21/kg), it is imperative that farmers seek ways to increase profit margins.

Things to keep in mind for the best shrimp production

While practicing shrimp farming, it is important to choose the location wisely, and hence the following factors must be considered:

a. Don’t choose any area close to mangrove forest as they are acidic.

b. Pick an unproductive agricultural land preferably located at the end of a river system.

c. Don’t forget to get due legal permission from the local governing bodies.

d. If shrimp farms are located close to each other, their access to natural freshwater gets reduced. Try to maintain a distance of 20 meters between all small farms.

e. Quality of water contributes a lot to the growth of shrimps. Make sure that quality water is available. The pH level of the water must be between – 7.5 – 8.5 pH scales, ideally. If the water has high salt content, there can be siltation problems resulting in sedimentation in the bottom layer of the ponds as well as clogging of the filter nets.

f. The farmed shrimps must be provided with the best quality feed. Choose the ones that are specifically designed keeping in mind the nutrient requirements of a variety of shrimps.
