Enhanced Liferay Enterprise Application Performance by Removing GSA Integration

Time to time evaluation and optimization of real world application for improved performance is one of the most significant aspect of our techie life. We have to pay high degree of attention towards the efficient usage of tools and technologies. Recently, I removed Google Search Appliances (GSA) integration from a full functioning Liferay application and the outcomes were somehow much striking 

The Liferay application is meant to furnish its users the domain specific scientific data. The application holds colossal amount of data accessible through advance search functions.  I was in process of exploring possibilities to minimize the time for both content uploading and page loading. In order to manage the indexing and front-end display of the data, it was integrated with both Google Search Appliances (GSA) and Apache Solr.

There was nothing against capabilities of GSA, yet I decided to remove its integration to find out if single search engine could execute the search function in a better way or not. I made sure there should not be any kind of disruption in current functionalities as well as          futuristic scalability of the application.

Benefits of Removing GSA Integration

àMassive reduction in amount of time for content uploading which decreased from 8 to 30 minutes to 2 to 5 minutes

 àPerformance improvement in overall page loading time, which decreased up to 20-50 %

àCost saving of around $50,000.00

Conclusion

During the process of removing GSA, I developed several functionalities that could address each precise requirement of the application’s search function attainable through Apache Solr. The end user could delightfully experience the improved performance without having any disruption during the optimization process. Overall, it proved to be the much enriching experience for my team and me.
