ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEGREE VS BACHELORS OF ENGINEERING

by GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management GLBITM
Engineering is the most sought out course in India. Engineering has various attributes and different categories each of which has its own prospects and significance. As we all know there are various branches of engineering like- chemical, mechanical, automobile, marine, civil, electronics, computer science etc. But majority of them don’t know that there is a fine line if difference between engineering technology degree and bachelors of engineering.

The engineering and engineering technology are very closely related fields but are separated professionally and in terms of curriculum.

A bachelor of science in engineering has much emphasis on theories and advance concepts, whereas the engineering technology emphasizes more on hands on experience and has much practical aspects and implementation.

When we talk about both the engineering degrees the major difference lies in its curriculum structure. As mentioned above the   curriculum focus is different while in bachelors of engineering the focus is much on theory and conceptual design, whereas the engineering technology focuses more on practicality and implementation.

Engineering programs usually require higher mathematical skills like calculus based theories and the engineering technology course majorly focuses on trigonometry, algebra, and other courses that are much in practical nature than being theoretical.

Both the engineering fields are equally challenging in real life, let us see what are the challenges faced by them-
Challenges faced by graduates in bachelors of engineering-
They are heavily busy in designing buildings, highways and bridges.
They have to identify various skills, techniques to solve engineering problems.
They have to do analysis and modeling to design engineering based solutions.
Where on the other hand challenges faced by graduates in engineering technology are-
They have to possess research capabilities and implementation for current technologies.
They have to consult development for electronic designs for commercial purposes.
Talking about the career path, the graduates after completing their bachelors in engineering are called engineers and tend to work in various technical companies at the entry level which involves research and development or designing.
Well one must know that the graduates after completing their four year engineering programs are called “technologists” and those completing their graduation after two years ET programs are called “technicians”.
People from these profession are much likely to work in various sectors like –construction, testing, product designing, manufacturing and sales.
Let us briefly summarize the differences between the engineering technology and bachelors in engineering-
• An engineering technology graduate is an implementer where as an engineering graduate is an innovator.
• In engineering technology the graduates are eligible for professional registration in most of the states with variation in license requirement, on the other hand in engineering graduates are eligible for professional registration in all states via examinations.
• The ET students are more likely to get testing, construction types of jobs whereas the engineers are more likely to get into design, research and development types of job.
• The graduates in ET mostly get into entry level jobs in construction, technical operator and technical sales while he engineers are more likely to get into entry level position in system engineering, product research or development.
