Employees need a Leader and not a Friend
When a person starts working with an organisation he goes through a lot of experiences. One most common thing which every employee has to deal with is the behavior of their leader. No matter how the leader behaves, the employee has to silently tolerate his behavior. There are leaders who are unable to mask their contempt for their employees, and even the employee works his level best, the leader is never pleased and thus he never appreciates the employees. This can make the team morale suffer a lot. Some employees make a hell lot of efforts to track the code of such leaders so that the morale of the team can be lifted high and it does not suffer a downfall. The work environment is highly responsible for the employees successful engagement. The leader must make the employees feel empowered, appreciated, and genuinely happy, but he should not be their friend.
Leadership is quite similar to parenting. A parent loves the child to the extent that whatever the child demands the parent provides so that the child never has to go through any discomfort and problem. But later when they realize they have already spoiled the child and there is no going back. In order to make the child a better person and a successful leader later in life, the parent has to say NO to the child for a lot of things.
Similarly, the leader wants his employees to be comfortable and happy in their workplace environment and therefore he starts playing a role of their friend rather than the team leader. But if he will not push them out of their comfort zones and not make them accountable, he is not proving himself to be a good leader. Just to stay in the good books of all the employees, he should not try to be their best friend. However this would be pure selfishness of the leader. When employees are working in a team, the leader has to put some load of expectations on them so that they bring out their most efficient nature and do not keep relaxing. A good leader is never a "fun boss" and a "fun boss" can never prove out to be a good leader.
In trying to avoid conflict, we only make things worse. When a leader tried to control things in the workplace, for example a conflict, then he might himself get trapped in the web because he is more likely to avoid conflict between the employees but that may lead to a worse situation. Conflicts generally arise when the employees are in a doubt and the boss does not even wish to clear it, such vague situations and lack of communication leads to the possibility of intra-office conflict.
Avoiding conflicts and not being transparent about everything with the employees, is a very misguided kind of an approach. Instead, the leaders must make their expectations towards their employees very clear. If the employees are disappointed with the behavior of their leader, it is because of lack of understanding and difference in perceptions.
The pyramid concept is quite an old-school concept and is more looked upon by people when the leader and employee relationship comes in. True leadership is when the pyramid is seen as an inverted one, with the leader as one entity which looks after the whole team, keeps the team above everything and everyone, and it takes a lot of courage, sacrifice and discipline to achieve that. However, a fact which cannot be rescued is that the boss or the leader is always the person who has to be lonely because a number of times the employees do have a liking for him, but he needs to be tough so that he can do the right things for the individuals.

It takes a special kind of person to be a leader.... Some people will never be able to learn that skill.. and it is indeed a very valuable skill to have....
