by Samuel Cooper Blogger
Bicycles have become a part and parcel of our daily lives. This humble vehicle has evolved through ages and have helped man effortlessly. Modern day has seen the transformation of this simple means of transport into a sturdy and unyielding machine known as the electric bike or electric bicycle. Nothing is easier than riding your bicycle through the long stretches of lanes and by lanes. But riding becomes tough when the journey is long and you have to carry heavy load along with it. Moreover, ordinary bicycles are not easy to manage if the rider is aged or disabled. So the past few years have seen the rise and popularity of electric bicycle over our age old bicycle.

So if you are contemplating to buy this vehicle, get to know everything before spending those bucks. Electric bikes are made up of four main parts namely the battery, the electric motor, frame with spokes and the brakes. Among these four the most vital organ of the vehicle are the batteries. To put it more simply, batteries are the lifeline of any ebike. They are connected to the main parts of the vehicle that needs power. Power is supplied to the pedal, the hub motor, the brakes and the head or the tail light for a faster and safer ride at night.

Batteries makes the bike move. So basically you can use any kind of battery on your bicycle to make it move. But it is always advisable to know the size, weight, durability and storing power of the battery to make your bike work efficiently. Electric bike batteries that are popularly used are made of lithium ion for they are small, light and easily rechargeable. These are the ones that we use in mobiles, laptops and almost every electronic device available in the market.

You need to consider few things before deciding on a battery pack that will match with your electric bicycle. First decide upon the voltage of your battery pack. The highest speed of your vehicle is directly dependent on the voltage of the battery, the higher the voltage, the faster is your bike. If you need the motor to help you while you paddle, you will need least voltage, that is 36 to 48 volt. While if you wish to use your bike as a motorcycle, the voltage will rise up to 72 to 100 volt for better and faster performance.

Secondly think about how long do you want your battery to last on a single charge. The capacity of electric bike batteries are a vital thing to consider. Consider how many amp-hours (Ah) it can discharge before it is empty. For instance, if it can discharge 1 amp constantly for an hour, it has the capacity of 1 Ah. You can also connect multiple batteries parallely to increase the capacity or the Ah level of your battery.

Lastly consider the discharge rate of your battery. Look out for the “C” rating which is a number that reflects safe and continuous discharge rate in Amps of the cell. If a battery is rated 1C, it means it can discharge it’s rated Ah capacity in current without any damage. If it is rated 2C, it means the battery can discharge twice it’s rated Ah capacity.

Now that you know each and every details about electric bike batteries, it’s time to leave your car and get your own super bike for a jolly good ride.
