by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

The entire world is fighting against the deadly coronavirus and the only escape is social distancing. There is no such evidence showing that pregnant women are at higher risk to caught by the coronavirus. However, there is no sufficient data to reach any conclusion. Pregnant women can also acquire coronavirus symptoms but it is not clear whether it is to be transmitted to the fetus.

If a woman is pregnant and infected by the coronavirus, she is more likely to have health complications. A study with limited data depicts some cases where pregnant women infected with coronavirus have faced a breathing problem after delivery. In pregnant women, the effect of infection can be more severe as compared to a non-pregnant. Pre-existing conditions such as age, weight, high blood pressure, and diabetes make its effects worse.

The risks of the covid-19 on pregnant women varies based on the timing of infection, the the severity of symptoms, and pre-existing disease.

Risks during pregnancy due to Covid-19

During pregnancy, a woman takes care of herself more thus the chances of getting infected are less. However, if she is infected, she may face breathing issues and weakness. This surely affects the health of the baby in the womb but passing on the virus to the baby is not evident. There is no data proposing that this virus is causing a risk of miscarriage or pregnancy loss. The infected mother may require care under ICU as this virus is fatal.

Risks during Delivery due to Covid-19

Some studies propose that expecting women with COVID-19 may probably face premature or preterm birth. The risk for preterm delivery increases by 6%, which is not significantly different from the general population. It is also seen that the delivery in such cases is cesarean type. However, cesarean delivery must depend on the pregnancy complications, not on the coronavirus infection. After delivery, the baby is more likely to be admitted to a neonatal unit.
