The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Thursday February 23, 2012 announced ranking of Pakistani universities, the ranking is based on the number of students, research productivity and quality, innovation and knowledge transfer, infrastructure, annual graduate output, international collaborations, student satisfaction and financial health of the institution.

The basic objective of the ranking is to improve international competition of universities in order to create attractive educational multi-cultural environments and the trend towards university collaboration and most importantly the opportunity to improve and eradicate institutional weaknesses.

Overall top 10 universities announced by the HEC include Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad at top, Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Islamabad at 2nd, The Aga Khan University, Karachi at 3rd, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad at 4th, University of the Punjab, Lahore at 5th, National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad at 6th, Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi at 7th, University of Health Sciences, Lahore at 8th, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology at 9th and Lahore University of Management Sciences at 10th position respectively.
