by Lizzie Howard Freelance Writer

Interviewing for a new job can be a very exciting time as it could be the first step in obtaining a position with a lot of opportunities. At the same time, it is natural to feel nervous that you will not provide a great first impression. Fortunately, there are several tips that can be followed that can help you to impress anyone at your next interview.

Focus on Healthy Habits Days Leading Up to Interview

One of the most important parts of any interview is to feel your best. To do this, you should focus on following healthy habits for the days leading up to the interview. Some parts of this should include making sure you follow a healthy diet, get some exercise and get plenty of rest for a couple of days prior to the interview. Doing this will help you feel your best and can keep you sharp and energetic during the interview, which will help you to make a great first impression.

Remember that the Company Called You

It is natural to feel nervous during an interview, particularly if you want or need the position. While there is bound to be competition for any job that you are applying for, you should keep in mind that the company did call you in. This means that the company was at least impressed with your resume and cover letter and wants to hear more about your experience. Knowing this and keeping it in mind should help you feel confident during the interview process.

Look Your Best

During an interview, it is also important that you look your best and appear professional. No matter what type of job you are applying for and interviewing for, it is always a good idea to overdress for the position. This usually will include wearing a business suit and professional shoes. You should also make sure the night before your interview that your clothes are clean and properly pressed. This will help you appear your best and show the interviewer that you are taking the opportunity seriously.

Have Stories and Experience Background Discussion Ready

When you come in for an interview the majority of the conversation will revolve around your past history and experience. You should be prepared to discuss your prior positions, what you worked on, successes that you have had, and why you ultimately decided to leave prior roles. If you are applying for a sales job, treat the interview like you are a sales professional, really sell yourself to the interviewer. Additionally, when discussing previous work experience, be sure to relate your past job duties to things that could apply to the job you are interviewing for. If you have limited work experience and are entering the workforce, you should be prepared to discuss academic successes that you have had. Having these stories prepared will ensure you are ready for these questions.

Have Questions to Ask

While you will be asked plenty of questions during an interview, you should also have questions ready to ask as well. Some of these questions will come up during the discussion, but you are bound to have an opportunity to ask questions at the end. You should have at least three to five relevant questions prepared to discuss about the company, the position, and anything else that is relevant for the position.

Do Some Research

Prior to coming in for an interview, you need to do some research to ensure you are prepared for the conversation. This research should include reading up on the company that you are applying to, reviewing the job description carefully to ensure you understand the role, and even doing a quick search on the people that you will meet with.

Be Polite

The most important thing that you need to do to stand out during an interview is to be polite at all times. You should always be polite and courteous to everyone that you meet during the process. This includes those that you interview with as well as anyone that you may meet. Those that are not polite during an interview could give off a bad first impression and may miss out on the opportunity.

When you are going to interview for any job, you will always want to impress everyone that you meet. By following these tips, you can help stand out and give a great first impression. This could help you greatly increase the chance that you will be called back for another interview or even receive a position offer.
