Durable Automobile Roof Racks For Off-Road Vehicles

by Austin Baines Content Writer

Off-road vehicles such as SUV's and trucks must also have durable roof racks for carrying luggage and other loads. These racks significantly help in saving space inside the vehicle by functioning as carrier for luggage and other loads.

A vehicle that is intended for off-road driving has to be tough. It has to withstand the impact and abuses of rough road bumps and dirt. It has to have a superb suspension system and excellent steering to ensure dependable maneuverability and safety. The safety of loads on the roof racks will also depend on the reliability of the suspension system.

An off-road vehicle also has to have a powerful engine that can provide enough torque and speed for the wheels via the transmission system. It also has to have large wheels and high-traction tires for it to avoid being stuck in mud. Its body has to have a low and wide center of gravity in order for it to avoid tipping over when maneuvering on high-steep and uneven terrains. Hence, the top load must not be too heavy as to cause significant shift in the vehicle's center of gravity.

Off-road vehicles are commonly used both for work and recreation purposes. The Roof Racks Sydney are not mere trivial accessories. They are necessary for carrying luggage, tools and sports-related equipment such as bicycles and kayaks. Most vehicles that are designed for off-road driving have built-in roof racks but there are also those that do not have built-in racks. Consequently, these vehicles need aftermarket roof racks to be installed on them. Even those that have built-in racks may require other types of specialized or customized racks for specific purposes.

There are five basic types of roof racks that can be installed on off-road vehicles. These are typically made from aluminum materials but some are also made from composite tough materials such as carbon fiber. They are designed not only to carry heavy loads but also to withstand abuse from the weather. These materials are resistant to corrosion and also resistant to fluctuating temperature.

Here are the five most common types of roof racks:

1.) Racks for skis and snowboards: These racks are designed to safely hold both skis and snowboards simultaneously, provided that there is sufficient space. Although these items can readily fit inside most sports utility vehicles (SUV's), it would be necessary to fold down a rear seat. This will reduce the available passenger space inside the vehicle. This type of racks can also be used to securely hold various types of winter sports gear. Skis and snowboards are prevented from shifting around while the vehicle is moving. Scratches are thereby avoided in this manner. Of course, dirt and melting snow will be prevented from ruining the interior of the SUV.

2.) Racks for bikes: Bikes can take significant amount of space inside a vehicle. This makes it impractical for bikes to be placed inside. Even if the vehicle is a truck with ample space in the truck bed, a bike rack will still be necessary to securely fasten the bikes. This will prevent the bikes from being damaged or scratched.

3.) Racks for kayaks: Although kayaks can be hauled using a trailer, they can also be carried on the roof. This is relatively more cost-effective than purchasing a trailer. These racks are specifically designed to securely hold the kayaks. Rollers are also often integrated with these racks that allow for convenient loading and unloading. The racks also protect the kayaks and the top of the vehicle from dents and scratches from the loading and unloading of the kayaks.

4.) Enclosed roof boxes: These are relatively more expensive than the other types of racks but they offer greater protection. These boxes have hard shell protection that is made either from composite or metal materials. Enclosed roof boxes can protect sport gear and other items from weather elements.

5.) Open cargo racks and baskets: These are ideal for carrying and transporting cumbersome and awkward items. Items can be prevented from sliding and falling because of the sidewalls. A net can also be strapped over the racks for extra security. Camping gear such as grills, coolers, sleeping bags, tents and cook wares can securely be carried using rooftop baskets.
