Drop Shipping
Dropshipping is a way to fulfill orders. If you have an e-commerce business, dropshipping is selling products for other brands. The drop shippers are the internet retailers who accomplish the orders from the customer to the manufacturer/wholesaler of the product where the manufacturer/wholesaler delivers the product directly to the customer.
This is how the dropship business model works:
- You list the supplier/manufacturer’s product on your drop shipping store for customers to buy.
- The customer visits and purchases something from your eCommerce site.
- You order that exact item that the customer paid for from your supplier/manufacturer.
- The supplier then ships this item directly to your customer.
The good thing about this business model is that you don't pay upfront for inventory because technically, you only pay the supplier when you sell the product. Dropshipping also targets online shoppers who want plenty of shopping options.
A typical business expanding its inventory would need a large capital upfront to manufacture and test new products. It will also require a large space (warehouses) to store the finished products. By partnering directly with a manufacturer/wholesaler/supplier, you can expand your e-commerce inventory quickly with less capital and fewer risks. If a product doesn’t sell, you can always stop selling it on your online store without the risk of losing money over any unsold inventory.
If someone told you that dropshipping is a scam, keep your cool and explain what it is. You can tell them that you're an internet retailer distributing and selling a company’s products.
