by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

First-Generation (1996 – 2001)

The first-generation Honda Step WGN was a four-door MPV with one door on the driver’s side, two doors on the passenger’s side, one in front, and a sliding door for easier access at the rear and the fourth door at the rear. In 1997 and 1998, the additions were introduced on the Step WGN including ABS brakes, dual SR airbags, and a pop-up tent made of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) for outdoor fun.

The Step WGN can accommodate 8 passengers; the middle seat can be folded and converted into a picnic table while the front seats can be rotated to face the table, making a table for five. It comes with AC with vents and controls for front and rear passengers. The Step WGN also offers luggage space that can be extended by folding the rear seats.

Engine and Transmission

The Honda Step WGN came with Honda’s 4-cylinder inline K20A DOHC engine that produced 110 KW (150 HP) at 6500 rpm and fuel consumption of 5.6L/100 KM coupled with a 4-speed automatic. There were a few models that had the 4-cylinder B20B engine.

Second Generation (2001 – 2005)

The second-generation Honda Step WGN was designed to accommodate families with children. With several seating arrangements namely Food Mode, the Playing Mode, the Sleep Mode, and the Cargo Mode, making the Step WGN a true MPV.
In 2003 Honda modified the Step WGN to fit the looks of Honda vehicles.

Engine and Transmission

Honda continued using the 2.0-liter K20A DOHC i-VTEC engine that produces 118 KW (158 HP) at 6500 rpm, but it was a bit tuned to improve its performance and fuel economy. In 2003 Honda introduced an upgraded Honda Step WGN with a 4-cylinder 2.4-liter K24A DOHC i-VTEC producing 120 KW (160 HP) at 6000 rpm and fuel consumption of 7.8L/100KM.

Third-Generation (2005 – 2009)

The third-generation Step WGN was a completely new design with 5 doors, unlike the previous models that had only one rear sliding door. The car’s dimensions were reduced and featured a new low-platform chassis which improved its handling. There was an upgrade on the suspensions and use double-wishbone suspension. In 2006 the Step WGN added features such as a power slide, a smart key system, and heated door mirrors.

Engine and Transmission

This model continued using the 4-cylinder 2.0-liter K20A and the 2.4-liter K24A engines, with the 2.0-liter mated with a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.4-liter (FWD) comes with a CVT transmission.

Fourth-Generation (2009 – 2015)

The Fourth-Generation Honda Step WGN came as a fully redesigned model with the dimensions increased, except its width. The 2009 model was available in 7 trim models namely G, GL Package, L, Li, Spada S, Spada Z, and Spada Zi.

Engine and Transmission

The 2.4-liter K24A was dropped and a new 4-cylinder 2.0-liter R20A engine was introduced producing 115 KW (156 HP) at 6300 rpm and fuel economy of 7.6L/100KM attached to a 5-speed CVT transmission.

Fifth-Generation (2015 -2020)

The fifth-generation Honda Step WGN came with new features to make a fun-to-use minivan. The cabin features a functional space much like a home living room with upgraded tailgate (the waku waku gate) where there is an option for opening up or a sub-door that opens to the side. This side opening sub-door enables third-row passengers to get in and out of the car without opening the entire tailgate and also loading and unloading cargo has become much easier. It also came with the magical third-row seat that can be folded making it easier for passengers to embark and creating more space for luggage.

Engine and Transmission

Honda Step WGN introduced a new 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine with a CVT transmission that delivers a powerful and smooth ride, and excellent fuel economy. It also offers a 2.4-liter K24A and a consumption of 6L/100KM.

Finally

The Honda Step WGN is indeed a unique and innovative model that aims to cater to customers with outdoor and recreational interests, providing them with a convenient and novel way to enjoy camping or other outdoor activities. The Honda Step WGN appears to be a good example of such creativity in design and functionality. You can browse the Honda Step WGN stocklist for more latest and affordable models.
