Drive Through the Wilderness with the New Suzuki Jimny

by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

The Suzuki Jimny is an all-terrain mini SUV, produced by Suzuki since 1970 and is currently in its fourth generation. The 2022 Jimny is available in two trims SZ4 Jimny Lite and SZ5 Jimny. The 2022 Jimny offers a new, stiffer substructure that supports the rigid front and rear axles with respective differentials. Now, let’s take a brief look at the 5 pros and cons of the 2022 Suzuki Jimny that will simplify your decision-making.

5 Pros To Buy

Capable Off-roader

The 2022 Jimny is known for its impressive off-road capabilities, which indeed help compensate for its on-road shortcomings. Here are some key features that contribute to its off-road prowess: a selectable 4WD, a low-range transfer case, hill hold, and hill-descent control. These features combined make the 2022 Jimny a capable off-road vehicle, allowing it to navigate through rough trails, muddy paths, terrains, and steep slopes with relative ease.

Interesting Compact 4×4

The 2022 Jimny's combination of ample ground clearance, impressive traction, a low-range transfer case, and advanced control systems like hill hold and hill descent control certainly make it a versatile and capable off-roader. Tested several times on challenging terrains, it simply traversed through those rough and rugged terrains.

Robust Designed

The 2022 Suzuki Jimny indeed stands out when it comes to road presence and design. Despite its compact size, it has a visually distinctive and rugged appearance that sets it apart from many other vehicles in its class. The combination of these design elements made the 2022 Suzuki Jimny a trendy and sought-after off-roader. Whether driving through city streets or venturing off-road, it stands out in a crowd and reinforces its position as a stylish and capable vehicle in its segment.

Impressive Engine

The 2022 Jimny's modified 1.5-liter engine represents a significant improvement in power compared to its predecessors. While it may not be considered large or exceptionally powerful by modern standards, its performance is well-matched to the Jimny's compact size and relatively light weight.

Easy to Handle

The 2022 Suzuki Jimny's compact size indeed makes it a standout among 4x4 SUVs when it comes to ease of driving, especially in urban environments. This makes the 2022 Suzuki Jimny well-suited for city driving, especially in high-traffic conditions. It provides an enjoyable and stress-free driving experience, making it an appealing choice for urban commuters who also want the option to venture off-road.

5 Cons Not To Buy

Noisy at High Speeds

The 2022 Jimny's 5-speed manual transmission with short gearing is indeed designed to provide excellent off-road performance and low-speed control. However, this gearing can result in the engine running at higher highway speeds, leading to increased engine noise. However, the addition of a sixth gear could potentially improve the Jimny's highway performance and refinement.

Cramped Rear Seats and Storage

The Jimny can accommodate four passengers comfortably without any baggage.  But the cargo area is utterly minuscule, even with the seats folded flat. Despite its size, the Jimny is surprisingly generous for front passengers. There’s ample space for taller adults up front, while into the rear is cumbersome, but once you get there you’ll be treated with enough head, elbow, and knee room. By providing sufficient space in the rear seat, Jimny’s boot was sacrificed to a great extent. With the rear seats up, you have only 85 liters on offer, anything more than that will require the folding of the two 50:50 fold rear seats to unleash a 377-liter cargo area.

Moderate Safety

The safety features and equipment in the 2022 Jimny are indeed a point of concern, especially when compared to many modern vehicles that come equipped with advanced safety technologies.  It comes with features such as lane-departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and six airbags within the cabin. Additionally, the Jimny's three-star ANCAP safety rating from 2018 is below the current average safety ratings for new cars.

High Priced

The high demand and limited availability of the Suzuki Jimny in certain markets are indicative of its popularity as a trendy 4x4 vehicle. This can be frustrating for potential buyers, but it also speaks to the vehicle's appeal and reputation. It's essential to weigh your priorities, budget, and timeframe when deciding how to proceed.

Average Interior

The 2022 Suzuki Jimny, while renowned for its rugged off-road capabilities and distinctive exterior design, has been criticized for its interior quality and finishing. Ultimately, the interior is designed to complement its off-road capabilities and rugged image. While it may not offer the plushness and advanced features found in some other vehicles, it provides a functional and durable cabin that is well-suited for the demands of off-road adventures.

Eventually,

The Suzuki Jimny's unique blend of style, off-road capability, and compact size has undoubtedly made it a trendy and beloved small SUV. While it does have its shortcomings, it continues to attract a dedicated fan base for several reasons. You can now check the Suzuki Jimny stocklist for more available models.
