DOT is an abbreviation for Department of Transportation; and this page will address the current drug testing regulations by the United States government. The main focus of the DOT is to keep Americans as safe as possible. They test safety-sensitive transportation employees in aviation, trucking, railroads, mass transit, pipelines, and other transportation industries. DOT Drug Testing: What is a DOT Drug Test? Before we outline the nitty gritty behind the DOT guidelines and drug testing policies, I want to first address medical marijuana. Even with the recent legalization in some of our states, you cannot show a positive test result for marijuana. It does not matter that your doctor may have prescribed it. The idea behind it is that our Federal Government believes the operators will be more of a danger and hazard for the American public. I know many of us will argue we are perfectly functioning as pot smokers. You bet this will be a hot topic over the next few years. Roughly 10 million people are affected by the Department of Transportation drug testing requirements. Currently, DOT uses a 5 panel urine test for illegal drug use.
