Don’t Overlook These 3 London Art Exhibitions Before The End Of August

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Are you contemplating a Penthouse For Sale In Croydon – such as one of those that can be found within our own prestigious ISLAND tower – but would like to first immerse yourself in some of London’s famous culture before making your decision?

If so, you really can’t do better than popping into one of the capital’s art galleries this month. Below, we’ve come up with a rundown of just some of the art exhibitions in London that you shouldn’t miss during August.

Frank Bowling at Tate Britain, until 26th August

He may not be quite as much of a household name as his 1960s contemporaries at the Royal College of Art, David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj, but there’s no question that this is a well-deserved first major retrospective for the 85-year-old.

After all, Bowling has long established his own reputation as an artist who truly pushes the possibilities of paint, with this exhibition not only showcasing gorgeously colourful paintings, but also touching on political themes – such as migration, homelessness and colonialism – that feel very timely today.

Manga at the British Museum, until 26th August

London isn’t just about academic art with a capital ‘A’ – it’s also about celebrating those blockbuster art forms we’re all familiar with, and manga definitely fits into that category.

Anyone familiar with the worlds of Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon will have had some previous contact with the vibrant graphic universe of manga, and this show is claimed by the British Museum to be the largest manga exhibition to have ever taken place outside Japan.

Affinities at David Zwirner, from 30th August until 21st September

While the above two exhibitions are both hugely popular crowd-pleasers, it’s also important to note the abundance of slightly lower-profile – but no less rewarding – galleries and shows that the British capital has to offer.

The German art dealer David Zwirner’s London gallery at 24 Grafton Street in Mayfair is a fine example, showcasing contemporary art across three levels of a Georgian townhouse. From the end of August, it is holding a small two-person exhibition of Jasmine Thomas-Girvan’s sculptures alongside Chris Ofili’s paintings, with the two artists responding to their shared home of Trinidad.

Hopefully, the above selection has served to whet your appetite if you’re doing a ‘London art tour’ anytime soon. And whether you are or you aren’t, you may like to learn more about the opportunity to snap up a penthouse for sale in Croydon that ISLAND can give you; simply register your interest in our remaining available properties today, and we will keep you updated.
