Dogman: What you need to know about hiring equipment and operators

by Miacrane Service servicing the mobile crane and heavy haulage indus

If you need something moved or lifted, you will probably need to use a crane. Unless you're a fully fledged construction company, you may not realise that, along with a crane and crane operator, you will also have to hire a dogman. In order to avoid liabilities and to increase the safety of your project and everyone in the area, it is important to hire qualified staff to carry out your lifting and moving project.

Mobile crane hire companies often provide all the staff required for your project, making it a one-stop solution to your needs. They benefit by knowing that their equipment is operated by trained staff.  By providing the staff along with the equipment, it saves you time, energy and money. Freelance crane operators, riggers and dogmen are not always easy to find, especially on short notice, but when you work through a mobile crane hiring company that supplies their own operators, riggers and dogmen, you have peace of mind knowing that it is all taken care of.

Lifting and moving projects are highly specialised and it can pose some risk, which is why companies only hire crane operators, riggers and a dogman who has completed Australian standard qualifications of the highest standard available. Safety is the most crucial aspect of the training, but each individual undergoes rigorous training to ensure the success of all types of lifting and moving projects.

Functions of the dogman, riggers and crane operators vary, for instance:

●crane operators calculate the volume of material that can safely be lifted, based on the capacity of the crane and the weather conditions. The safety and quality of the lift is their main priority.
●riggers ensure that the equipment they use with the crane, such as cables, braces, booms and pulleys suit the capacity of the job. They use hand signals to communicate with and direct the crane operators.
●dogman is responsible for guiding objects into the right places using hand and other signals. A dogman must be qualified within Australian standards.

Within a mobile crane hire company, the dogman, riggers and crane operators work together to ensure the safety of all staff, bystanders, the site, the items being lifted, and of course, the equipment. They should attend continuous education in plant operation and skills development in order to ensure the most effective services to clients.
