Do You Want to Buy Diamonds? Avoid These 5 Mistakes

by David Alexander Wholesale & Retail Jewelry Sales in South Tampa
For many, diamond shopping is full of fun and an exhilarating process. However, it can turn to be a head spinning activity for first-time diamond buyers. The diamond buying process is rewarding but it can turn out to be frustrating if you are not well-versed with the basics of diamonds. In the beginning, terms like clarity, certifications, carat and inclusions with a fluency can make you feel puzzled. To help ease that anxiety and before you fork over your hard-earned money for buying a diamond, we have listed the top five diamond buying mistakes and how you can avoid them.

  • Making Decisions Without Prior Research
The number one mistake that diamond buyers often make is that prior to going through the purchasing process of a diamond, they do not take note of parameters like budget and personal taste. If you have a short timeframe, then there is no need to buy the first diamond you see just to finish up the purchase process. It is always advisable to take your time, look at various styles and price points and give serious thought to the diamond that you think meets your requirements and is within your budget limit.

  • Not Going for a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Certified Diamond
The GIA’s certification process is basically an industry standard for reputable dealers. If accompanied by a GIA certificate, any buyer can feel totally confident about the buying process of diamonds. The GIA certificate is used to grade the diamond based on the 4Cs and it is the symbol of trust and purity. You need to crosscheck whether you are buying a GIA certified diamond or not.

  • Not Considering the 4C’s of Diamond
The most common mistake that we often commit when purchasing a diamond is not considering the 4C’s color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Do not ignore the 4C's. You don’t have to be a gemologist, but there is need to do a little research about diamond quality in advance so that you can be familiar with the terms color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. This will help you go a long way towards making a smart and informed decision, rather than getting stuck with a low-quality stone.

  • Settling for Subpar Cut
Cut is most important among other 4Cs. An excellent cut is used to maximize the passage of light that increases overall radiance and sparkling of diamond. The well-cut diamonds are expensive per carat than poorly cut diamonds. A deeply cut diamond carries its carat weight "hidden" in the depth of the diamond as opposed to its width.

  • Choosing the wrong supplier
All diamonds are not created or cut equally. And not all suppliers offer the same level of service and quality. When you select a supplier, you need to ensure that they can meet all your needs.

Buying a diamond is a big decision and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. You need to put some dedicated thought into your purchase. It is better to go for a reputed diamond wholesaler in Tampa where a team of qualified gemologists can guide you through the entire buying process and brief you about the most important features of a gemstone, the 4 C’s–clarity, cut, color and carats (size). Ours is an independent diamond and jewelry appraisal company with accreditation from Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.) and Graduate Gemologist (G.G.).
