Do You Want To Be A Bio-Med Technician?

by David Tekaat Enternet Monetary Acquisition
Bio-med techs repair medical equipment.  They repair the equipment the dentist, doctor, surgeon, and nurse uses.   They repair all different kinds of medical equipment; x-ray, heart monitors, brain monitors, lung air pumps (ventilators), germ killing machines (sterilizers), heart starting machines (defibrillators), laboratory equipment, etc.  There must be at least a thousand different types of medical equipment.

Not only do bio-med techs repair medical equipment, they also check the equipment to make sure it works right, work on it to prevent break downs (preventive maintenance), and make sure it won't shock anyone (safety check).

Being a Bio-med Tech can be very rewarding.  You get to be a part of a system that helps people get well.  You get to play a game called troubleshooting, which is trying to figure out what is broken on medical equipment that is not working right.  Which can be very challenging, and enjoyable, if you like challenges.  You get to be an electrician, an electronic technician, a plumber, a steam fitter, a hydraulic technician, pneumatic (air) technician, gas technician, vacuum technician, computer technician, etc. You can become a supervisor, or perhaps start your own business repairing medical equipment.

In order to be a Bio-med Tech you will have to get an associates degree in applied science.  Or you can join the army.  They will train you to be a bio-med tech.  In the army you will start out as a beginner (specialist).  The training for a beginner takes about 3 months.  Then after working as a beginner for about 2-4 years, the army will send you back to training to become an "advanced bio med tech".  Which takes about 9 months.  In order to go to the advance course, you will have to enlist for 4 more years.

Also during this time in the army you will be able to take college classes, so eventually you will be able to get your associates degree.  You can apply what you learned in the army, towards your associates degree.  Also you can prepare for and take an exam to become "certified" as a bio-med tech, so when you get out of the army, you can get a job working for a civilian hospital or a civilian company.

Some army bio-med techs get jobs working at army medical centers, or veteran medical centers.  When they work in army or veteran medical centers/hospitals the time that they spent in the army, is added to the time they spend working for them, so they get to retire earlier.  Perhaps at age 56.

Sometimes being a bio-med tech can be boring.  If you're not really fixing medical equipment and only checking it, (preventive maintenance and safety) it can be boring.  But then again it can be a very nice occupation.  You get to work in medical center/ hospitals, which is a nice environment.  (although a lot of army bio-med techs work in army field hospitals, which are not as nice)  You can volunteer to be airborne, jump out of airplanes and fix field hospital medical equipment.
