Do you know of a
place in the world where a whole city floats on the water, where there are no
streets but canals, where there are no cars but gondolas, where thousands of visitors come every year just see the
city on the water…..I know only of one place like that: the Italian city of
Venice.
Located in the
famous homonymous lagoon, the city of Venice
is a legendary place considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world
for its peculiar architecture and its artistic patrimony.
The best way to
start a tour of Venice
is to wonder around the city, admiring the network of little streets and
canals. Don’t forget to cross the Big
Canal using one of
the four bridges present on it; Ponte di
Rialto is the most famous and oldest bridges, first built in the 1500s.
Let’s proceed
with a visit to the main square of city (the only real square of Venice!)
Piazza San Marco. In the middle of
the piazza, we find the San Marco’s
Basilica; the history of Venice
is represented in the mosaics that decorate the church. Noticeable are also the
4 bronze horses placed on the main door, which were brought from Constantinople from the fourth crusade.
Near the
Basilica, we find Palazzo Ducale,
which was once the seat of the government and now is a museum where we can
admire the famous Ponte dei Sospiri
and the ancient prisons.
Something we
cannot miss during our tour of Venice
is what is probably considered the symbol of city: the Campanile di San Marco. This bell tower was built in the XII
century as a lighthouse and now is completely renewed and covered by low
reliefs.
A tour of Venice should also
include the several palaces that are scattered around the city which bear the
name of the family who founded them and the fondachi
which were built in the Middle Ages as a shelter for
foreign merchants.
Venice is also famous for its world known Carnival; one of the most
ancient traditions of the city, the Carnival is a very important event in the
city. People from al over the world come all dressed up to dance and walk around,
admiring the artisanal Venetian costumes and masks which represent one of the
trademarks of the city.
An experience in
Venice will
really leave a sign in your life; it is a city with a magic halo that stands no
comparison with any other place.
