One of the reasons why the Magnolia trees are popular among gardeners is that they produce fragrant flowers. Most species of magnolia trees bloom in February and March. Others produce flowers in late June.

The evergreen type of magnolia trees bloom once per year during late spring early summer.

Knowing when your magnolia tree will bloom will help you make a proper maintenance schedule. Most varieties of magnolia trees require full sunlight for healthy flowering.

However, if it is too warm, the buds of the trees will be destroyed. Some magnolia trees can reach a height of up to 90 feet at maturity and a diameter of up to 8 inches.

Most deciduous magnolia trees are first to bloom in a year. After the dormancy period, these types of magnolia trees flower mainly during late winter and early spring. The leaves grow back shortly after the blooming. The saucer magnolia is an example of the deciduous magnolia trees.

When is the best time to trim a magnolia tree?

Magnolia trees will help to beautify your garden, but they tend to be dense as they grow. Some property owners may be tempted to trim the overgrown branches from time to time. However, arborists advise people to avoid heavy trimming as this may destroy the trees. According to the experts, excessive trimming can lead to stress and make the tree susceptible to various diseases.

It is recommendable to wait until winter to start the trimming your Magnolia tree. For young trees, the trimming should only be done in mid or late winter if necessary. Some evergreen magnolia trees should be trimmed in summer. Young deciduous magnolia requires little maintenance. The ideal time for trimming the trees is early fall or mid-summer.

Before you start trimming your trees, take time to clean your tools using disinfectants before and after the exercise.

One of the commonly used disinfectants used for cleaning the tools is alcohol. Wipe the trimming equipment with alcohol and wait for it to dry. If you are trimming several trees, clean the tools after you finish trimming each of them to avoid spreading any diseases from one tree to another. Prioritize dead and unhealthy branches.

Removing healthy branches of the trees can cause damage as magnolia trees tend to be very sensitive to cuts. According to tree experts, gardeners should avoid trimming more than a 1/3 of a tree at once. The trees should only be trimmed after they start blooming.

Remove all the dead branches near the trunk. One of the common indications of a dead branch is if they do not produce leaves or flowers during the flowering season

In some cases, the branches may have a different color as compared to the other parts of the tree. Discolored branches are signs of a disease. Some of the common diseases that affect magnolia trees include fungal leaf spot and algal leaf spot.

The Effect of Fertilization in Flowering

Flowering plants can help to improve the looks of your landscape. However, you need to apply fertilizer to maintain the flowers. The main types of fertilizers that you can use to boost the flowering of your magnolia trees include synthetic and organic fertilizers.

Irrespective of whether you have synthetic or organic fertilizer, it is vital to determine the ideal time for application, the method to use, and the unique needs of your plants. If you are uncertain about such issues, contact a tree expert. Applying the right fertilizer and at the right time will make your flowers look more attractive.

It is recommendable to water your trees before you apply the fertilizer.
