Diving Straight In - The Key to Building Your Coaching Practice
I've talked with countless adults who are in the process of becoming a coach. They're always excited, curious, tentative, hopeful, and wondering how on earth to launch into this new venture. They're often in the enthusiastic throes of their coach-training program and are soaking up the new skills and skills practice opportunities like the driest of sponges. Well, yes, you can! And yet, many new coaches struggle with how to get their fledgling businesses off the ground. One of the biggest mistakes I've seen so many people make early in the process is waiting until they're fully trained to start coaching real students.
The people who know and love you the best already know you're a coach. They've experienced your ability to listen, be present, see the potential in them that they can't see in themselves sometimes, and call them toward their greatness. These are the people you can reach out to with an email now. Let them know you're in training to become a coach, that you're not asking them to become your students, but that you need guinea pigs! Ask them directly to forward your email on to people they know that might be good candidates. It's helpful to outline in your message what coaching is, what it isn't, and the kind of people you're looking for.
Be completely transparent. Your new students will feel most comfortable and most trusting of you and your process together if you are completely transparent right away about where you are in your learning process as a coach-in-training. Position your journey together as "learning together as you go," and let them know that you want this to be a mutually beneficial process. This will help them feel at ease, knowing that you won't be trying to be more than you are but that you will absolutely have valuable skills to share with them.
If you're a blossoming coach, you may feel that you need just one more class, or just one more book, or one more tele-seminar to have all the skills you need to coach well. The truth is, though, that once you begin a training program, you're ready to start coaching, and the learning never ends, anyway. If you're waiting for that day to come, you'll be waiting a long time!. So, dive straight in. Pull out your courage, transparency, trust in yourself and your path, and take just a few minutes to do some planning. Remember, Confucius said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Make your "single step" the one that will get in you in action being what you are: a coach!
These days, Arpita Classes serves who are on the path to making sure that who they are deep inside is reflected brilliantly in their lives on the outside. They are people ready to explore deep within to make the changes that will get their lives on the outside aligned with who they are on the inside, and they are ready to take full responsibility for creating the lives they crave. Many of her students are coaches themselves, both coaches-in-training and coaches who have been coaching for years.
