Discover the Wonders of Cuba
When Christopher Columbus arrived more than five centuries to Cuba, entranced by the beauty of the island, stated categorically that the island was "the most beautiful land that human eyes had ever seen". Therefore, nature tourism is expanding in Cuba. That island washed by the Caribbean Sea is rich in idyllic landscapes.
The unique panorama, with more than 17,000 species of animals and 9,000 species of plants, invites you to observation and adventure during your Cuba holidays. If you are looking for a sensory experience and to delve into the fascinating world of cave systems, do not miss visiting the central province of Ciego de Avila.
In the northwestern part of that territory is Boqueron, a Cave System belonging to the Biosphere Reserve "Buenavista". The site stands out for the rare formations of stalactites and stalagmites and for its historical value. It is a protected area since it possesses a wonderful subterranean nature with high aesthetic values.
Boqueron is located in the town of Florencia, in an area characterized by the presence of heights forming a valley watered by the Jatibonico del Norte River. There you will find a good place to stay, at the homonymous hotel. The four stars installation has 24 rooms and it is an ideal offer for cheap Cuba holidays.
The caves are of fluvial origin and contain more than four miles of galleries of great beauty and spaciousness having active tunnels where the river flows, too. The cave system is composed 49 dens, which are of scientific, educational, and tourist-recreational interest as well as very important for the history of Cuba.
These caves, considered the largest in the province of Ciego de Avila, served as a refuge for Aboriginal groups of Cubans who left their artistic mark in pictographs etched into the walls. Through these paintings are known the lifestyle of the first inhabitants in Cuba, their tools, their gods, and how revered the dead, among other things.
The caves, formed over millions of years by the action of the river, also served as a shelter during the Cuban wars of independence and in the pre-revolutionary period. Specialists from the local Speleological Group Xaxabi perform actions to protect and conserve natural resources in Boqueron as part of an environmental protective strategy in the leisure Cuban industry. According to the National Office of Statistics and Information, from last January to August, Cuba received 2,021,649 international visitors, mostly from Canada, the UK and Italy.
